Adams waited patiently for a chance at the closer's job in Chicago, but the Cubs instead relied on imported firemen -- such as Doug Jones, Mel Rojas, and Rod Beck -- during much of Adams' tenure with the team. Nevertheless, Adams spent three productive seasons in the Cubs' bullpen before being sidelined by elbow problems at the start of the 1999 season. Adams saved 13 games for Chicago after his return, sharing the closing duties with new acquisition Rick Aguilera, but was sent to Los Angeles after the season as part of a deal for Ismael Valdes and Eric Young. "I took the ball whenever they asked me," he told reporters after the trade. "But it seems I never did enough to satisfy anybody.'' (JGR)
