Ace (his given name) was the relief star of Mel Ott's wartime Giants. Beginning in
1942, he led the NL in games pitched three straight years and in games finished four
straight. His 70 appearances and 67 in relief in 1943 set ML records. He topped the
league in saves in 1944 and 1945 (13 and 15), but the next year he jumped to the
then-outlaw Mexican League.
