Ironman submariner Abernathy struggled with control and injuries before finally enjoying his first good year in the majors at age 29 with Cleveland in 1963 (7-2, with 12 saves). With the Cubs in 1965, he was named NL Fireman of the Year when he led the league with 31 saves. Two years later with the Reds he again was Fireman of the Year and again led in saves (28). He had 148 career saves. (MC)

»October 3, 1965: The Cubs tie a major-league record with their 3rd triple play of the season -- 1B Ernie Banks to SS Don Kessinger -- but Pittsburgh wins 6–3 at Forbes Field. Bill Faul is on the mound during each triple play. Submariner Ted Abernathy suffers the loss to Roy Face, but concludes a record season for appearances (84) and consecutive errorless games (84) for a pitcher. He has 31 saves.
»January 11, 1969: The Cubs obtain veteran reliever Ted Abernathy from the Reds for three minor leaguers, C Bill Plummer, OF Clarence Jones, and P Ken Myette.
»July 1, 1970:
The Cards trade Ted Abernathy, acquired May 29, to the Royals for P Chris Zachary. Abernathy will go 9–3 the rest of the year for KC.
»September 29, 1970: Winning pitcher Ted Abernathy singles home a run in the 12th to give the Royals a 14–13 win over the Twins. The two teams use 49 players, 27 by Minnesota, to set a new ML record. The previous mark (48) in both leagues was set in 1956. The Twins lead 9–5 going into the 9th but the Royals score six runs. Leo Cardenas has five hits and four RBIs for the Twins.
