A troublesome nature kept Abbott moving from club to club, mostly in the lower reaches of the Giants' system. His 34 years of managing (1903-06, 1910-11, 1913-14, 1919-34, 1936-43, 1946-47) set a since-broken minor league record; he spent that time with 24 teams, winning five pennants.
