Apr 12, 1948 - The Yanks give veteran Spud Chandler his release. Chandler won 109 games in 11 seasons as a Yank the only ML team he played for. He was 9-5 last season and finishes his ML career with a winning percentage of .717 (109-43).
Jul 4, 1947 - New York's Spud Chandler defeats the Senators 7-3 for his final major league victory. Bone chips in his pitching arm will sideline the 39-year-old vet but he'll end the year with the loop's 2nd best ERA (2.46). Joe Haynes will top the A.L. with a 2.42 ERA.
Jun 5, 1947 - The second place Yankees slice the Tigers lead to one game by beating Detroit 7-0. Spud Chandler tosses a three-hitter while Tommy Henrich paces the drive with two homers. Ralph Houk and Fred Hutchinson are tossed after a flare-up in the 4th inning involving 5 players.
May 30, 1947 - A's pitchers Dick Fowler and Joe Coleman stop the Yankees recording 2 shutouts over New York 1-0 and 4-0. Spud Chandler loses the opener despite allowing three hits. Bill Bevens drops the nitecap walking Coleman to force in a run and giving up a roundtripper to Eddie Joost. Joost scores a pair in the nitecap and the lone run in the opener.
May 24, 1947 - Matching the Chief's game yesterday Spud Chandler gives the Yankees a 5-0 win over Boston allowing 2 hits.
May 17, 1947 - The Yanks win a pair from the White Sox by 4-3 scores. Spec Shea wins the opener collecting three hits a two runs scored. Joe DiMaggio's homer in the bottom of the 9th off Maltzberger is the winner. Bill Dickey's brother George has a pair of hits and a stolen base for the White Sox. In the nitecap George McQuinn has three hits and scores the winning run in the 8th to break up the pitching duel between Spud Chandler and Chicago's Ed Lopat.
Apr 15, 1947 - With yesterday's opener in Washington rained out the A's open at Yankee Stadium before 39344. Under new manager Bucky Harris the Yanks manage just six hits off Phil Marchildon as the A's win 6-1. Eddie Joost and Elmer Valo pull off a double steal in the 5th when the A's increase their lead to 3-0. Joost scores on the swipe of home. Former A's vet George McQuillan playing 1B for Nick Etten scores New York's only run. Spud Chandler takes the loss.
Jul 2, 1946 - The Yankees nip the Red Sox 2-1 before a Stadium crowd of 69107. Spud Chandler walks 9 in the first 4 innings but takes a no-hitter into the 9th before Bobby Doerr hits a one-out single.
May 12, 1946 - A crowd of 69401 the largest in Stadium history watch the Yankees give the Red Sox 2 unearned runs and manage just 3 hits off Mickey Harris and lose to Boston 3-1. The Sox gets just 3 hits off loser Spud Chandler.
May 2, 1946 - At Yankee Stadium the Yanks do all their scoring in the 4th to beat Cleveland 8-2. Nick Etten cracks a grand slam and then ends the inning by lining into a DP with the bases loaded. Spud Chandler wins his 4th straight.
Apr 16, 1946 - At Shibe Park Spud Chandler 38 allows just 5 hits as the Yankees beat the A's 5-0. Chandler spent most of 1944-45 in the Army and appeared in just 5 games in two years. Joe DiMaggio has a two-run homer and Tommy Henrich a two-run double to pace the offense. A's starter Russ Christopher allows all the runs in his six innings of work.
Sep 16, 1945 - At New York the Browns and Yankees split a pair the Bombers losing the opener 6-2 to Bob Muncrief. Vern Stephens has a 3-run homer and drives in 4 runs. Leadoff hitter Pete Gray is 1-for-4 collecting his safety off reliever Tiny Bonham. It is the last major league hit for the one-armed outfielder as he goes 0-for-3 in the nitecap a 5-4 win for New York. Spud Chandler the winning pitcher drives in 3 runs.
Nov 11, 1943 - The MVPs for both leagues are named. New York Yankees righthander Spud Chandler (246 votes) wins in the AL with Luke Appling (215) finishing second. Chandler led the AL in wins (20), CG (20), ERA (1.64) and had the highest batting average (.258) among AL pitchers. Stan Musial (267) is the winner in the NL. For the second year in a row‚ a Cards teammate finishes 2nd as Walker Cooper attracts 192 votes.
Nov 1, 1943 - League statistics show the White Sox Luke Appling leading the AL hitters with .328 the lowest since Cobb hit .324 to lead in 1908. Conversely of course the pitchers' marks were topped by Spud Chandler's 1.64 ERA the best since 1919. Spud also has the best percentage at .833 on a 20-4 won-lost mark. The White Sox aging OF Wally Moses stole 56 bases after stealing only 3 two years before. The veteran Mel Ott hits only .234 for his Giants but he still has 18 homers-all in the Polo Grounds.
Oct 11, 1943 - Bill Dickey's 2-run HR off Mort Cooper in the 6th gives the Yanks the championship. Spud Chandler gives up 10 hits but strands 11 in the 2-0 victory. Chandler won 2 games and compiled an 0.50 ERA. A full share is worth $6139 to the New York players; the Cards get $4321 each. The Series grosses $1.1 million at the gate receives $100000 for broadcast rights and donates $308000 to War Funds.
Oct 5, 1943 - Many ML players have gone into the war including several key Yankees and Cardinals players. Nevertheless both these clubs are back in the Series. New York wins the opener at Yankee Stadium 4-2 behind Spud Chandler who will later be named 1943 AL MVP. Joe Gordon homers off Max Lanier.
Apr 22, 1942 - At New York Joe DiMaggio poles a homer plus 2 triples to lead the Yanks to an 11-5 win over the A's. Spud Chandler coasts to his 2nd win.
Apr 15, 1942 - At Washington Bobo Newsom holds the Yankees in check for three innings but New York tallies three in the 4th and rolls on to a 9-3 victory. DiMaggio has a single double and long homer with two on into the CF bleachers. Phil Rizzuto adds three singles to make the win easier for Spud Chandler.
Sep 8, 1940 - In a 9-4 win against the Red Sox Yankee Joe Gordon hits for the cycle to back Spud Chandler's pitching.
Jul 26, 1940 - New York P Spud Chandler beats the White Sox with his bat knocking in 6 runs with a single and 2 HRs one a grand slam off Pete Appleton. The 6 RBI by a pitcher ties the ML record held by Appleton George Uhle and Wes Ferrell. Joe Gordon also hits a homer his 7th in 8 games. Tonight's game was the last night game for New York this year: their record after dark is 3-2.
Aug 29, 1939 - Detroit snaps the Yankees' win streak at 10 games by beating the visiting New Yorkers 8-7. DiMaggio hitting .408 hits a 3-run HR in the 9th to tie it but the Bengals score off reliever Spud Chandler. After going 16-3 in their last 19 games the Yankees now lead the AL by 12 lengths. During that span the Yankees have scored an impressive 125 more runs than they've allowed.
Jul 31, 1938 - After New York wins the opener 5-1 behind Monte Pearson New York's Spud Chandler pitches all 15 innings as the visiting Yankees beat the White Sox 7-3. In a postgame radio interview with Bob Elson Jake Powell of the Yankees will make headlines with remarks about "beating up niggers and then throwing them in jail" as part of his off-season duties as a policeman. For the statements Judge Landis suspends Powell for 10 days. According to historians Dan Okrent and Steve Wulf after Powell's suspension the outfielder went to Harlem and worked his way south stopping in every bar to buy drinks and apologize for his remarks.
May 21, 1938 - The power-laden Yankees give little support to P Spud Chandler but he hits a HR in the 8th to gain a 1-0 victory over Thornton Lee and the White Sox.
Jul 19, 1937 - Pitcher Johnny Broaca is fined $250 and suspended indefinitely by the Yankees for jumping the club. On the 13th the Yanks announced Broaca had a torn ligament in the socket of his right arm. The Yanks will recall Spud Chandler to take Broaca's spot.
