Barnes joined the Giants after his older brother Jesse had become their star pitcher. Virgil did not establish himself until after Jesse was traded away. From 1924 to 1927 he won 53 games for New York. An injury to the deltoid and bursa tendons in the shoulder forced Barnes's retirement. (NLM)
