Washington's trademark was a toothpick in his mouth whether batting, running, or
diving for a ball. The switch-hitting and speedy Washington almost made Royals fans
forget his long-time predecessor at shortstop,
Freddie Patek. He displayed tremendous
range and a strong, accurate arm to provide, with
Frank White, a solid middle infield
for the Royals through the early 1980s.
