Wide-shouldered Taffy Wright was a lefthanded hitting machine with adequate fielding
skills. He was switched from pitcher to outfield in the minors and, as a Senators
rookie in 1938, led the AL with 13 pinch hits and 39 attempts. He had a career .328
average when called to military duty in 1942. After three-plus seasons, he returned
having lost some sharpness, and though he batted .324 in 1947, he dropped to .235
in 1949, his final season.
