    Sam Gray

Gray once started off a game for the 1926 Athletics by throwing 15 straight balls. He eventually won the game with a two-hitter, 3-1. In 1925 a series of misfortunes kept him from an outstanding record. He won his first eight, but a pitched ball broke his right thumb. Later that season, his wife died suddenly. He still finished 16-8. Two years later, Gray went a career-best 20-12 for the Browns. The eccentric curveballer led the AL with 37 starts, 305 innings, and four shutouts in 1929, and with 37 starts and 24 losses in 1931. (WAB)
