Jul 6, 1962 - The Indians regain first place from the Angels as Ruben Gomez beats Early Wynn and the White Sox 5-3.
Dec 3, 1958 - The Giants trade P Ruben Gomez and C Valmy Thomas to the Phils for P Jack Sanford. Sanford‚ who slipped in his sophomore year will win 24 games in 1962‚ including 16 in a row‚ while leading the Giants to a pennant. The Phils Bob Carpenter will later rue‚ "it was the worst trade I ever made."
Sep 20, 1958 - The Giants Ruben Gomez gives up 3 hits all to Bobby Gene Smith as the Giants beat St. Louis 5-1. Willie Mays's 3 hits raises his average to .340 and he steals his 30th base the first to steal 30 three times since Kiki Cuyler in 1930.
Sep 1, 1958 - In San Francisco the Giants sweep a doubleheader from the Dodgers (and 5 of 6 in the Labor Day series) by taking the 1st in an A.M.-P.M. doubleheader 8-6. Mays is 5-for-5 with 2 doubles and a HR to drive in 5 runs. The nitecap is a memorable 4 hour: 35 minute marathon. The Giants tie in the 9th on Schmidt's homer and the Dodgers go ahead 5-4 in the 16th on Furillo's RBI. Whitey Lockman's HR in the bottom of the 16th ties it then a bunt single by Ray Jablonski is followed by another bunt by P Ruben Gomez. Errors by Roseboro and Furillo follow allowing Jabo to score the winning run 6-5. Mays is 11-for-20 for the series with 4 homers. San Francisco Police Chief Frank Ahern sitting behind home plate dies of a heart attack at the climax of the 2nd game.
Apr 15, 1958 - The San Francisco Giants defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers in the first ML game played at Seals Stadium with Ruben Gomez pitching an 8-0 shutout. Giants SS Daryl Spencer hits the first HR off Don Drysdale. The Giants set an attendance record for Seals Stadium by drawing 23192 fans.
Sep 21, 1957 - Gail Harris is the last player to hit a HR as a New York Giant as they beat the Pirates 9-5 in the 2nd game of a doubleheader. Ruben Gomez gains the last New York Giants' victory.
Apr 22, 1957 - At the Polo Grounds Willie Mays has a 3-run homer and Ruben Gomez has his 2nd CG win as the Giants beat the Pirates 3-1. Hank Foiles has a 425-ft triple and a 258-ft homer which hits the RF foul pole.
Jul 17, 1956 - In the 2nd inning in Milwaukee the Braves Joe Adcock gets hit as Giants Ruben Gomez gets him on the wrist. Adcock takes a few steps towards 1B shouts at the pitcher then chases Gomez. The pitcher then fires another ball hitting the first baseman on the thigh before taking off for the safety of the Giants dugout. Braves 3B coach Johnny Riddle misses a tackle on Gomez who reaches his teammates and makes it to the clubhouse where he finds an ice pick. He is finally wrestled to the floor before he can return to the field. Both players are tossed by Bill Jackowski and the NL fines Adcock $100 and Gomez $250 + a three-game suspension. The last-place Giants eventually win 8-6 ending the league-leading Braves 7-game win streak.
Jan 11, 1955 - Before an exhibition game in San Juan Puerto Rico Willie Mays and teammate Ruben Gomez get into a brawl. It starts when Gomez slips into the batting catch ahead of Mays and batting practice pitcher Milt Ralat then refuses to throw. The sulking Gomez sits down on the plate and Mays then steps to the side and directs the pitcher to throw to him there. Ralat then throws an insulting slow pitch which Willie barehands and fires back. He and Ralat exchange words and when Mays walks towards the mound Gomez brandishing a bat attempts to interfere. Mays drops him with a right. The two later apologize to each other.
Oct 1, 1954 - Dusty Rhodes gets his 3rd pinch hit of the WS driving in 2 runs in the 3rd. He is hitting for OF Monte Irvin who ironically had 11 hits in the 1951 Series. The Giants' Ruben Gomez easily bests Indians P Mike Garcia 6-2.
Sep 21, 1954 - Before an Ebbets Field crowd of 4467 the New York Giants top the Dodgers 5-2 behind a combined five-hitter by Ruben Gomez and Jim Hearn. Bobby Hofman playing 3B for the injured Thomson hits a first-inning grand slam. In the batting race Mays and Mueller are both 2-for-3 while Snider is 1-for-4.
Jun 10, 1954 - At Milwaukee Bill Taylor knocks a pinch homerun in the 10th off Gene Conley to give the Giants a 1-0 win over the Braves. It is the first time in history that a pinch solo homer accounts for all the scoring. For Taylor a reinstated service player it is his first ML HR. Ruben Gomez wins his 6th of 7 decisions against the Braves.
Sep 6, 1953 - The feuding continues as the Dodgers beat the Giants 6-3 but lose Carl Furillo the NL's leading hitter at .344 for the rest of the regular season. Furillo is hit on the wrist by a Ruben Gomez pitch in the 2nd and is restrained from charging the mound. He goes to first base and with a 3-2 count on the next batter Furillo races from 1B into the dugout to swing at Leo Durocher. who ordered the beaning. In the melee a Giants player steps on Furillo's left hand breaking a finger. Furillo will not play again till the World Series but his .344 will lead the NL in hitting. Roy Campanella homers in the 2nd inning and sets the ML mark for HRs by a catcher. His 38th tops the NL high of 37 hit by Cubs C Gabby Hartnett in 1930.
Jul 19, 1953 - The Giants Whitey Lockman leads off the game with a HR for the 2nd day in a row as the Giants whip the Braves 7-5. Henry Thompson's 2-run homer in the 9th is the winner for Ruben Gomez. Dave Jolly is the loser. Milwaukee takes the nitecap 2-1 in 5 innings as Al Worthington is scored upon for the first time in his 3 ML games. Max Surkont wins giving up just two hits both to Al Dark. One of Dark's hits is a home run.
Jun 5, 1953 - The Giants use a Caribbean battery in their 11-1 win over the Cubs. Cuban Ray Noble is behind the plate while Puerto Rican Ruben Gomez is on the mound. Gomez drives in 2 runs as well as picking up the win.
