Although his weak bat and some hard luck limited him to reserve roles most of the time, the personable Mexican's glove, range, and versatility kept him in the majors for 11 years. When Yankee shortstop Tony Kubek was forced to retire after the 1965 season, New York traded infielder Phil Linz to the Phillies for Amaro. His three years in New York were plagued by injuries, which started with a collision with leftfielder Tom Tresh in his first week in a Yankee uniform. (AB)
