Aug 15, 1969 - Don Sutton (15-11) opens a 9-game eastern swing for Los Angeles with a 9-2 win at Montreal. The Dodgers remain 2 games behind the first-place Reds. Montreal reliever Roy Face makes his final ML appearance a record 657th consecutive relief effort (excluding his 2 games with the Tigers).
Aug 31, 1968 - Steve Blass gets the first out against the Braves and then moves to LF as Roy Face relieves. Face retires Felix Millan and ties Walter Johnson's ML record of 802 pitching appearances with one club. Blass comes back to pitch and the Pirates go on to win 8-0. Blass will not get credit for the shutout but will still lead the NL in shutouts with 7. Late in the game the Pirates announce the sale of Elroy Face to the Detroit Tigers.
Oct 3, 1965 - The Cubs tie a ML record with their 3rd triple play of the season-1B Ernie Banks to SS Don Kessinger-but Pittsburgh wins 6-3 at Forbes Field. Bill Faul is on the mound during each triple play. Submariner Ted Abernathy suffers the loss to Roy Face but concludes a record season for appearances (84) and consecutive errorless games (84) for a pitcher. He has 31 saves.
May 15, 1962 - Cubs P Barney Schultz ties Roy Face's ML record by relieving in his 9th consecutive game for Chicago. Today's effort doesn't help as the Cubs lose 6-5 in 13 innings against the Mets. Roger Craig enroute to a 10-24 year is the winner while Tony Balsamo loses to notch his only career decision.
Oct 10, 1960 - Bill Mazeroski stars again. His 2-run double stakes Harvey Haddix to a 3-0 lead. Roy Face is called on once more for another hitless effort to preserve a 5-2 win and 3-2 WS lead for the surprising Pirates.
Oct 9, 1960 - Vern Law wins again thanks to his own RBI single and Bill Virdon's 2-run hit. Roy Face retires the final 8 batters in order. Pittsburgh's 3-2 win evens the WS.
Oct 5, 1960 - In a portent of things to come Bill Mazeroski's 2-run 5th-inning HR off Jim Coates is the difference as Pittsburgh beats New York 6-4 in its first WS win since 1925. Roy Face survives a 2-run 9th-inning Elston Howard HR to preserve Vern Law's victory.
Sep 6, 1960 - Pittsburgh's All-Star SS Dick Groat suffers a broken wrist when hit by a Lew Burdette pitch. The Pirates captain 2nd in the batting race will be sidelined until the final weekend of the season. Dick Schofield his replacement has 3 hits as the Bucs rally for a 5-3 win. Roy Face finishes a Pittsburgh win for the 30th time in 1960.
May 2, 1960 - Ron Kline's 7-hitter gives the Cardinals a 4-3 win and ends Pittsburgh's streak at 9 games the club's longest since 1945. Roy Face issues a bases-loaded walk in the 9th for his 2nd straight loss.
Jul 25, 1956 - At Pittsburgh the Cubs score 7 runs off Bob Friend and Roy Face in the 8th inning to take a 7-4 lead. But after Turk Lown loads the bases Roberto Clemente belts Jim Brosnan's first pitch off the LF light tower and with the ball still in play circles the bases for an inside-the-park game-ending homer to win 8-7. It is the 2nd ultimate grand slam for Pittsburgh this year. Dale Long also homers his 20th the most ever by a Buc left hander.
