Taylor saved 73 games in his career, almost all as bullpen ace for the Cardinals
and Mets. In his first start, for the Indians in 1962, he lost a 12-inning duel,
4-0, on a grand slam by Boston's
Carroll Hardy. Traded to St. Louis, he recorded
a NL-high eight relief wins for the 1964 World Champions. When the Mets took the
championship in 1969, Taylor won
nine games and, for the second of three straight
seasons, saved 13. In six career postseason appearances, he did not allow a run and
had three saves. The Toronto native graduated from medical school five years after
he finished pitching and became the Blue Jays' team physician.
