Cey filled a traditional trouble spot when he became the Dodgers' regular third baseman
in 1973. He held the position for ten seasons and became the leading home run hitter
in L.A. Dodger history. Six times an All-Star in the 1970s, Cey got his nickname
from his stocky build, short legs, and choppy running style. In 1981 his string of
eleven seasons with 20 or more homers was interrupted by the players' strike and
a late-season broken arm. He returned in time to play in the WS, where he was beaned
by a
Goose Gossage fastball. Nevertheless, he was co-MVP in the Series. In 1983 he
was traded to the Cubs. His 25 homers and 97 RBI helped them win the 1984 Eastern
Division title.
