Mejias left the sugar cane fields of Cuba when signed by the Pirates. He hit in 54 consecutive games at Waco (Big State League) in 1954. The fast Mejias saw only part-time duty in Pittsburgh but seemed to blossom with Houston in 1962, hitting .286 with 24 HR and 76 RBI. Acquired by Boston for his righthanded power, he could not match his 1962 efforts. (ME)
