Blades was an intelligent, aggressive reserve player for most of his 10 ML seasons,
and he hit .300 in each of his three seasons as a starting outfielder for the Cardinals
(1924-26). After managing in the Cardinals farm system in the mid-1930s, Blades managed
the parent club to 92 wins and second place 1939, but was replaced when the Cardinals
sputtered early in 1940.
