    Parnell Woods


    Woods was a star Negro League third baseman who appeared in the 1939-42 East-West all-star games. He batted .335 as a key member of the 1945 Black World Champion Cleveland Buckeyes. He played a number of winters in Venezuela, winning the 1947 batting title with a .354 mark and leading the league with 28 runs, 13 doubles, and three triples. He had a reputation as a fighting leader, a strong hitter, and a good fielder. He closed out his career in 1949, batting .275 in 40 games with Oakland of the Pacific Coast League. For 27 years he was business manager for the Harlem Globetrotters basketball team. (MFK)
