Mahoney, never a pro player, joined the Red Sox as a scout in 1939 and served as head scout from 1960 to 1973. His discoveries for the Red Sox included Jimmy Piersall, Walt Dropo, Wilbur Wood, and the club's eventual GM and CEO, Haywood Sullivan. (FVP)
