Macha's old A's could be model for new Brewers: The Brewers were the cutesy and cutthroat story of the 2008 stretch run, kicking sand in the big market teams' faces by acquiring CC Sabathia in July, firing manager Ned Yost with 12 games remaining and surviving a wild ride under interim Dale Sveum (who lost...

The Brewers plan to make a "serious" offer to keep pitcher CC Sabathia, although the team's immediate priority is to hire a manager in the next few weeks, team executives said Saturday. Sabathia was acquired by Milwaukee in a July trade with Cleveland and became the team's ace, going 11-2 with a 1.65 ERA in 17 starts.

When the Phillies came and went: First baseBrewers: Prince Fielder. Like Ryan Howard, Fielder helped carry his team the final month. He batted .316 in September and had 15 RBI in the last 12 games, which coincidentally was when manager Ned Yost was replaced by Dale Sveum. He may not have generated the same production as Howard, but definitely falls into the category of a hitter who the other team doesn't want to get beaten by.

Time to choose sides for baseball playoffs:

The postseason is almost here for Major League Baseball. And for the ninth straight year the Rangers won’t be part of the festivities. If you’re looking for a team to pull for in the playoffs, here’s a look at the pros and cons for each of the seven teams to have already qualified for the postseason:

    Chicago Cubs

Reason to root for:If you’re the type who likes to see long-suffering groups of whiners get relief, you’ll probably be rooting for Chicago.

Player to root for:Derrek Lee. He’s a class act and an underrated player with a solid all-around skill set.

Reason to root against:If they win, you’ll never hear the end of it from their omnipresent, overbearing fans.

Player to hate:Jason Marquis. The mediocre starting pitcher thought it was"ridiculous"that the Astros didn’t immediately agree to play hurricane-postponed games at a neutral site. You willing to leave your family behind in a hurricane, Jason?

    Los Angeles Dodgers

Reason to root for:Joe Torre can really stick it to the Yankees if the Dodgers win. His former employers are already whining that LA made the playoffs with a worse record than New York.

Player to like:Clayton Kershaw. The rookie left-hander from Highland Park is a YouTube phenomenon. It’s worth tuning in to see his curveball alone.

Reason to root against:There’s no justice in the world if Chan Ho Park can win a World Series ring.

Player to hate:Manny Ramirez. He pouted his way out of Boston with his"knee injury."Surly second baseman Jeff Kent deserves a dishonorable mention.

    Philadelphia Phillies

Reason to root for:Maybe if the city of Philadelphia wins a championship, they’ll drop the"woe is me"act.

Player to like:Chase Utley. He’s the best at his position and by all accounts a good guy.

Reason to root against:Philadelphia fans will be the first to tell you how mean and nasty they are. If the shoe was on the other foot, they wouldn’t be rooting for your team.

Player to hate:Brett Myers. Let’s just say he’s had a few anger management issues in the past and there’s no reason to root for a guy like that.

    Milwaukee Brewers

Reason to root for:They’ve made smart draft choices and (mostly) smart acquisitions.

Player to root for:Ryan Braun. The reigning Rookie of the Year had a solid second season and is poised to have a great career.

Reason to root against:They overreacted in firing manager Ned Yost just before the end of the season, and it’s tough to root for an organization that can’t manage itself.

SHORT HOPS: Indians, Carmona strike deal:

Fausto Carmona, a surprising 19-game winner last season, agreed Thursday to a $15 million, four-year contract with Cleveland, a deal that would be worth at least $43 million if the Indians exercise three club options. Carmona's signing gives the Indians protection in case they are unable to keep C.C. Sabathia, the defending AL's Cy Young Award winner, who is eligible for free agency following this season. The 24-year-old Carmona went 19-7 with a 3.06 ERA and emerged as one of the AL's top starters in 2007, one season after he went 1-10.

Brewers'plan for Gallardo:Milwaukee manager Ned Yost said the Brewers would prefer to give pitcher Yovani Gallardo another minor league rehab start before bringing him up. BASEBALL NOTES: Clemens had wife take an HGH shot, report says:

Brian McNamee told congressional investigators he injected Roger Clemens'wife with human growth hormone as she prepared for aSports Illustratedswimsuit edition photo session five years ago, theNew York Daily Newsreported Friday.

McNamee testified during his Capitol Hill deposition on Thursday that he injected Debbie Clemens at her husband's direction, theNewssaid on its Web site, citing an unidentified Washington source. Clemens'lawyers did not directly address the accusation when asked. The pitcher was in Washington to meet with congressmen for a second consecutive day.

"It's pretty clear now who this guy really is,"Rusty Hardin, Clemens'lead lawyer, said of McNamee."This guy never ceases to amaze me."

McNamee told baseball investigator George Mitchell that he injected Clemens at least 16 times with steroids and HGH in 1998, 2000 and 2001, charges the seven-time Cy Young Award winner repeatedly has denied. Clemens and McNamee are set to testify Wednesday.

"Did Roger get the Cy Young'cause his wife took the HGH?"said Lanny Breuer, another lawyer for Clemens.

McNamee's lawyers called on Clemens to provide a DNA sample. Asked about that, Hardin said the pitcher would comply with any request of that type from a federal authority.

"But they're going to have to come to us,"Hardin said.

    Doctor, Red Sox at odds

The doctor who claims he knows Curt Schilling's shoulder"better than anybody who breathes on this planet"insists surgery is the only way the 20-year veteran can pitch again.

But Boston's team physician disagrees. He believes rehabilitation is the best way for Schilling to play this year.

"I think his chance of coming back to pitching with rehab or a conservative approach is zero,"Dr. Craig Morgan said."He might not come back after surgery, either. However, if the surgery is successful, he should be fully rehabbed by about All-Star break."

Bedard finally a Mariner:Left-hander Erik Bedard was acquired by the Seattle Mariners from the Baltimore Orioles in a long-delayed trade for five prospects. Baltimore received outfielder Adam Jones, who probably will start in center field in Opening Day. Indians:Pitcher Scott Elarton agreed to a minor league contract with Cleveland. He was 14-14 in 52 starts with the Indians in 2004 and'05. He has a 56-60 career record with a 5.31 ERA.

"That was pretty cool,"Braun said."I was never part of something like that before."

Weeks and Braun each hit another homer and Hardy added two doubles -- all in the first four innings -- to give Milwaukee sole possession of first place in the NL Central. The Brewers began the day tied for the lead with the Chicago Cubs, who lost 10-5 at Pittsburgh.

Johnny Estrada also homered to give Milwaukee six in a game for the first time since April 29, 2006, in a 16-2 win over the Cubs at Chicago.

Weeks sent a 2-1 pitch into the Reds'bullpen, his second leadoff homer this season.

Hardy followed two pitches later with a drive into the Brewers'bullpen down the right-field line. Braun hit Dumatrait's ninth pitch over the fence in center.

Gallardo, Brewers get lead back in NL Central:

MILWAUKEE -- Yovani Gallardo and the Milwaukee Brewers concentrated on taking on the Philadelphia Phillies, not each other.

Gallardo won his third consecutive decision, retiring 14 straight batters in one stretch to lead the Brewers over the Phillies 2-1.

Milwaukee moved back into the NL Central lead, one game over the second-place Cubs. The Brewers had been in first place since April 21 before falling one percentage point back of Chicago on Wednesday.

One day after a dugout altercation between Ned Yost and two of his players, the Brewers manager hopes the skirmish will spark his struggling team, which has just five wins in its last 15 games.

"What happened yesterday happened, and I think it is going to be for the good of all of us,"Yost said before Friday's game."It just shows the desire and intensity we all have to win. Sometimes frustrations mount up a little bit and it's good to get them off your chest for everyone."

Gallardo (4-1), filling in while ace Ben Sheets is sidelined with a finger injury, allowed one run and four hits in 6 2/3 innings, struck out seven and walked one. The former Fort Worth Trimble Tech High star retired 16 of the first 17 batters he faced before pitcher Kyle Kendrick singled in the sixth.

Francisco Cordero struck out the side in the ninth for his 33rd save in 38 chances, completing a four-hitter. Phillies batters struck out 12 times in all.

Prince Fielder's run-scoring single in the first and Ryan Braun's run-scoring single in the fifth built a 2-0 lead. Braun's hit drove in Gallardo.

    Brewers call up local pitcher:

Yovani Gallardo, a 21-year-old right-handed pitcher who graduated from Fort Worth Trimble Tech in 2004 and was drafted in the second round by Milwaukee, was promoted Thursday to the Brewers'major league roster.

Gallardo could start Monday against San Francisco, according to an MLB.com story on the Brewers'Web site, unless he's needed in the bullpen before then. He was called up to replace right-handed pitcher Chris Capuano, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained groin.

Considered the Brewers'top pitching prospect, Gallardo was 8-3 with a 2.90 ERA in 13 starts for Triple A Nashville and leads all of minor league baseball with 110 strikeouts. In 73 career minor league games, Gallardo is 27-12 with a 2.48 ERA and 439 strikeouts.

He has lost his last two starts at Nashville but pitched well in the most recent game, striking out 12 in six innings at Memphis.

"I know him enough to know he's a quiet kid, a confident kid who goes about his business in a real good manner,"Brewers manager Ned Yost said.

Ned Yost has no plans for a May parade, no matter how well his Brewers are playing. Geoff Jenkins homered and drove in the go-ahead run in the eighth and the Brewers beat the Washington Nationals 3-1 Wednesday to cap their best homestand in 15 years at 9-1. "Sure you enjoy it," the sometimes surly Yost said.

Chris Capuano showcased a nasty changeup against the Washington Nationals on Monday night, and the Milwaukee Brewers won for the eighth time in nine games because of it. Capuano pitched into the ninth, striking out a season-high nine, and Geoff Jenkins hit a homer in the 3-0 win. The pitch that handcuffed the Nationals is one manager Ned Yost called the "Funky McNasty" in a bullpen session this...

Notes: Yost going with every fifth guy: Assuming he can get through this rain-soaked road trip, Brewers manager Ned Yost said he will simplify his starting rotation -- line up his five starting pitchers and let them go. In past seasons and so far this year, Yost had kept his top three or four pitchers on an every-five-day schedule and then mixed in the back-end arms when needed.

Suppan subdues his former mates: The Cardinals presented Jeff Suppan his World Series ring before Friday night's rainout at Busch Stadium. Milwaukee Brewers skipper Ned Yost then performed some managerial gymnastics to give Suppan Saturday's start against his former team. Notes: Great stuff, bad command: Ned Yost knows things must improve in the pitchers' control department, as was evidenced in Thursday's loss to the Giants. Yet, while the hurlers struggled, Prince Fielder returned with a bang and Bill Hall immediately echoed the sentiment to spark the bats.
