Dec 13, 1980 - The Cubs send Mike Vail to the Reds in exchange for Hector Cruz.

Oct 1, 1980 - Steve Carlton fires a two hitter and the Phils beat the Cubs‚ 5-0. Mike Vail's leadoff single in the 8th is the first hit off Carlton. Mike Schmidt and Greg Luzinski hit back-to-back homers in the 6th‚ off Dennis Lamp‚ as the Phils remain a half-game out of first place.

Jun 30, 1979 - The Mets overcome a pinch hit grand slam by the Cubs Mike Vail's in the 11th inning‚ and hang on to win‚ 9-8. The Mets break a 3-3 tie and score 6 runs in the top of the 11th at Wrigley to take a 9-3 lead. The big blows are 2-run homers by Lee Mazzilli‚ his second HR of the game‚ and Joel Youngblood. Chicago storms back with 5 runs in the bottom of the frame‚ but New York prevails. This is the first time since Cy Williams did it in 1925 that a team has hit a grand slam in an extra inning and lost. It is the 3rd time that a Cub has hit a pinch grand slam in extra innings.

Sep 15, 1975 - Late-season call-up Mike Vail extends his hitting streak to a rookie-record 23 straight games as the Mets edge the Expos 3-2.

Jun 5, 1948 - Richie Ashburn of the Phillies hits safely in a 6-5 nitecap win at Chicago. It is his 23rd consecutive game starting May 9‚ a 20th-century NL record for a rookie (Jimmy Williams had streaks of 27 and 26 games in 1899). Alvin Dark will tie it this year and Mike Vail will match it in 1975. The Phils also take the opener‚ 4-2.
