A St. Louis native, Shannon became the Cardinals' regular right fielder in their
1964 World Championship season. He hit a game-tying two-run homer off
Whitey Ford
in the 1964 Series opener, which St. Louis won 9-5. To make room for newly acquired
right fielder
Roger Maris in 1967, Shannon was moved to third base (a position he
quickly learned), and the Cardinals won two straight pennants and the 1967 WS. His
HR off Boston's
Gary Bell was the key blow in Game Three of the 1967 Series. A solo
homer in Game Seven of the 1968 Series was the Cardinals' only run off
Mickey Lolich
as the Tigers clinched. A kidney disorder forced Shannon to retire prematurely and
he became a Cardinal broadcaster in 1972.
