Husky Mike brought hot grounders under control by slapping them with his glove hand
to subdue the bounce, then barehanding the pickup and throw. He had the prototypical
third baseman's virtues: a strong and accurate arm, consistency afield, and a reliable,
if not potent, bat. He led the
Federal League for average at his position in 1915
and the National in 1916, while helping Brooklyn to its first pennant in the modern
era.
