Jul 21, 2003 - The Cubs trounce the Braves 15-6. Tom Goodwin gets 5 of Chicago's 21 hits in the rout with Matty Alou going 4-for-6 with 2 doubles and 5 RBI. Mark Grudzielanek has 4 hits and 4 runs and Sosa has a homer and 4 RBI.
Jul 11, 1974 - The Padres release OF Matty Alou. Matty's brother Felipe was released by the Brewers on April 29th. Younger brother Jesus keeps the Alou name alive in ML baseball playing for the A's.
Apr 6, 1973 - At Fenway Park‚ the first ball is thrown out by Ed Folger‚ a Boston Red Sox farm hand who had his legs amputated last September following a farm accident. In the top of the first inning, Ron Blomberg of the New York Yankees becomes the first regular season designated history in major league history when he faces righthander Luis Tiant. Blomberg walks with the bases loaded and winds up 1-for-3 in the 15-5 loss to the Boston. Sox DH Orlando Cepeda goes 0-for-6‚ but Carlton Fisk strokes two homers‚ one a grand slam‚ in the 20-hit Boston assault. Second baseman Doug Griffin notches four hits for Boston‚ which overcomes a 3-0 by scoring eight runs to chase Mel Stottlemyre by the third inning. The Yanks record eight hits off Tiant‚ five by the Alou brothers, Matty and Felipe.
Nov 24, 1972 - The Yankees acquire veteran Matty Alou from the A's for Rob Gardner and Rich McKinney. It is the 2nd time the Yankees have traded Gardner to the A's for an Alou. Last year it was Felipe.
Aug 27, 1972 - The Cardinals trade .314 hitter Matty Alou to the A's for 2 players Bill Voss and minor leaguer Steve Easton. The A's will send Matty on to the Yanks in November.
Sep 5, 1971 - Cardinal pitcher Jerry Reuss is a winner 12-5 in a duel with Chicago's Fergie Jenkins. Jenkins gives up HR to Matty Alou in the contest and now all 3 Alou brothers have hit dingers off him.
Jan 29, 1971 - The Pirates trade OF Matty Alou and P George Brunet to the Cardinals for OF Vic Davalillo and P Nelson Briles.
Sep 13, 1970 - At Wrigley the Pirates lead the Cubs 2-1 with 2 outs and no on in the 9th when Willie Smith hits a routine fly to Matty Alou. Alou drops it and three singles later the Cubs have a 3-2 win. The victory puts the Cubs a game behind the Buc and a half-game behind the Mets.
Jul 16, 1969 - Despite 4 homers by Montreal the Pirates beat the Expos 8-7 scoring 3 in the 8th and 3 in the 9th. The Pirates only homer comes in the 8th innings with Matty Alou on 2B and Dan McGinn pitching when Willie Stargell splashes a pitch over the RF fence into the municipal swimming pool at Jarry Park.
Sep 29, 1968 - In a 3-0 loss to the Giants the Reds Pete Rose goes 1-for-3 to take his first NL batting title with a .335 average. Rose was 5-for-5 yesterday against Gaylord Perry. Matty Alou goes 0-for-4 to finish at .332.
Oct 2, 1966 - With the Pirates ahead of the Giants by 2 runs at the end of 8 innings ex-Buc Ozzie Virgil ties the score with his last major league hit a pinch single. The Giants bullpen holds and Willie McCovey's monster (estimated at 500 feet) pinch homer in the 11th wins it 7-4. The Giants use every player except Gaylord Perry held out in case he is needed to pitch against the Reds. With the Dodgers winning the Giants finish 1 1?2 behind and a San Francisco rainout will not need to be rescheduled. Matty Alou of the Pirates ends the season with a .342 average to lead the NL but drives in just 27 runs. This is a record low for a batting leader.
Dec 1, 1965 - The Giants send Matty Alou‚ coming off a .231 season‚ to the Pirates for P Joe Gibbon and INF Ozzie Virgil. Alou will rebound to lead the NL in hitting and have 4 straight seasons over .331.
Jun 2, 1964 - Giants OF Matty Alou suffers a fractured wrist as Pittsburgh's Bob Veale beats the Giants 3-1. Alou will miss 5 weeks.
Apr 2, 1963 - The Pirates steal young OF Manny Mota from the Colt 45's‚ which had acquired him in December‚ sending Houston OF Howie Goss and cash. For 5 years‚ Mota will be a solid 4th outfielder for the Bucs, often platooning with lefthanded hitters Jerry Lynch, Willie Stargell and Matty Alou.
Oct 16, 1962 - New York scores the game's only run as Tony Kubek grounds into a 5th-inning DP. In the 9th with 2 outs and Matty Alou on 1B Willie Mays rips a double to right off Ralph Terry but great fielding by Roger Maris keeps Alou from scoring. Willie McCovey then hits a screaming liner toward right but 2B Bobby Richardson gloves it giving the Yankees a 1-0 win and a 2nd straight WS victory. Terry is named WS MVP.
Oct 5, 1962 - Jack Sanford's 3-hitter handcuffs New York and knots the WS. Matty Alou's RBI grounder and Willie McCovey's HR off Ralph Terry account for San Francisco's 2-0 win.
