    Manny Sanguillen

    Manny Sanguillen from the Chronology

Dec 9, 1980 - The Pirates trade P Bert Blyleven and C Manny Sanguillen to the Indians for P Bob Owchinko‚ P Victor Cruz‚ C Gary Alexander‚ and minor league P Rafael Vasquez.

Oct 11, 1979 - Manny Sanguillen's pinch-hit‚ 2-out single in the 9th scores Ed Ott and breaks a 2-2 tie as the Pirates win 3-2 and even the Series at one game apiece.

Aug 12, 1977 - For the 2nd straight day‚ Oakland's Manny Sanguillen foils a no-hit bid. Today's single is off the Orioles Jim Palmer‚ who settles for a 2-hit 6-0 victory. Yesterday's hit was off the Yankees Mike Torrez‚ who finished with a 3-0 two-hitter.

Nov 5, 1976 - The Pirates trade C Manny Sanguillen and an estimated $100‚000 to the A's for manager Chuck Tanner.

Jun 19, 1974 - Runners are passed in 2 different games tonight‚ depriving Giant Ed Goodson of a HR in a Cardinals-Giants match‚ and creating confusion in a Pirates-Dodgers match. Goodson clocks a 3rd inning pitch from Bob Gibson‚ then passes teammate Garry Maddox between 1B and 2B. Instead of a HR‚ he gets one RBI and a single. The Giants win‚ 5-4‚ outhitting the Cards‚ 14-5. In the latter‚ Joe Ferguson apparently strikes out with the sacks full‚ and walks away‚ while Pirate C Manny Sanguillen agrees and rolls the ball to the mound. Lee Lacy‚ the LA runner on 3rd jogs to the dugout. The runner from 2B‚ Jimmy Wynn comes around but is tagged out sliding at home. Lee Lacy scurries from the dugout‚ slides home‚ and is also tagged out. Lacy‚ though tagged‚ is ruled safe according to the rules which gives him home automatically when a base on balls is called with the sacks full. The confusion is deemed moot as the Pirates prevail‚ 7-3.

Oct 9, 1972 - The Pirates edge the Reds 3-2 as Manny Sanguillen homers and drives in the winning run in the 8th. Pittsburgh comes within one game of clinching the LCS.

Sep 1, 1971 - The Pirates start what is believed to be the first all-black lineup (including several Latinos) in ML history‚ in a 10-7 win over the Phillies. The lineup: Rennie Stennett‚ 2B; Gene Clines‚ CF; Roberto Clemente‚ RF; Willie Stargell‚ LF; Manny Sanguillen‚ C; Dave Cash‚ 3B; Al Oliver‚ 1B; Jackie Hernandez‚ SS; and Dock Ellis‚ P. Another black‚ Bob Veale‚ was one of 3 relievers in the game.

Aug 8, 1969 - Hot-hitting Manny Sanguillen collects a single‚ double‚ and triple to lead the Pirates to a 7-1 win over the Padres. Sanguillen is 13-for his last-26. Bob Veale allows 11 hits but strikes out 10 for the win.
