Magglio Ordonez was back in the lineup Tuesday night, hitting seventh and playing right field. For how long?

Tigers manager Jim Leyland still has not decided whether to start Tigers outfielder Magglio Ordonez on Tuesday against the Chicago Cubs at Comerica Park.

Detroit -- All the players who figure in the Magglio Ordonez drama were on hand, or heard from, Friday on the second day of Ordonez's vacation from the starting lineup.

How busy was it? With manager Jim Leyland getting an extension and Magglio Ordonez's agent Scott Boras lashing out at the Tigers for benching Ordonez, the signing of 16 recently drafted players didn't get the attention it would have on a normal day.

Scott Boras, the agent for benched outfielder Magglio Ordonez, unloaded on the Tigers, accusing them of a "myopic" decision to remove a former batting champion from the lineup "for no compelling reason."

St. Louis The Tigers have benched slumping right fielder Magglio Ordonez. Ryan Raburn was to start in right field Thursday night in the series finale against the Cardinals.

Magglio Ordonez's 16-game hitting streak, his longest since 2005, ended in the Tigers' 3-0 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday.

American League

Best team:What’s kept the Toronto Blue Jays at the top of the standings in the AL East despite the recent hot play of Boston and New York? The Jays know how to win close games. Toronto won nine of its first 14 one-run games. It helps having relievers such as Jason Frasor (0.60 ERA) and Scott Downs (1.86) when you’re in a pinch.

Rising:If the Detroit Tigers need a winning streak, they can invite the Texas Rangers to Comerica Park. It worked again last week as the Tigers turned a modest three-game streak into a six-game run. They did it without Magglio Ordonez and are at the top of the heap in the mediocre Central.

Falling:It wasn’t exactly a good Thursday for the Chicago White Sox. First, they were rejected by Jake Peavy in their bid to add the ace to their starting rotation. Then they went out and got pummeled 20-1 by the Minnesota Twins, which is the worst loss in franchise history. It was Chicago’s seventh loss in 10 games and had the defending division champs in fourth place in the Central.

Worst team:The Cleveland Indians still have a worse record than the Oakland Athletics, but Oakland’s inability to hit the ball has landed the A’s here. Despite the off-season addition of Matt Holliday, Oakland has the worst batting average in the AL. The A’s also hit just 25 home runs in their first 39 games.

National League

Best team:So who’s been the biggest beneficiary in the absence of Manny Ramirez on the Los Angeles Dodgers? Juan Pierre. Ramirez’ replacement in left field is playing like he did when he was with the Florida Marlins. In his first 35 games, Pierre was hitting .404, with nine extra-base hits. His on-base percentage was .475.

Rising:Baseball’s defending champions are being downright rude when they’re on the road. Despite having a record under .500 at home, the Philadelphia Phillies have made their way to the top of the standings in the East. They’ve done it by dominating on the road. The Phillies went 15-5 as visitors to open the season.

Falling:The Florida Marlins have lost their way by catching teams at the wrong time. First they were swept by the Milwaukee Brewers when they were on a roll. Then they dropped two of three to the powerful Dodgers. That must have worn Florida down, as a bad Arizona Diamondbacks team took three of four.

Worst team:It gets tough coming up with something to write about the same team week after week. Washington can at least look forward to the June draft, when Stephen Strasburg will be picked by the Nationals. If Washington fans can’t wait that long, they can go to San Diego State’s baseball page (http://goaztecs.cstv.com/sports/m-basebl/strasburg09.html) for Strasburg Central.

Who’s hot

Raul Ibanez, Philadelphia:The Phillies signed Ibanez to be the left-field replacement for Pat Burrell. What they’ve got instead is an early candidate for NL MVP. Ibanez hit five homers in a six-game stretch and added 12 RBI. He’s now Philadelphia’s runaway leader in both homers and RBI.

Who’s not

Adrian Beltre, Seattle:The Mariners’ third baseman is longing for two weeks ago, when he went a seemingly torrid 2-for-13 in a three-game series against the Rangers. That’s because Beltre followed that by going hitless in his next five games and striking out seven times. His 0-for-4 Wednesday dropped his average to .200.

The Tigers have promoted outfielder Wilkin Ramirez from Triple-A Toledo to replace Magglio Ordonez, who will miss games Tuesday and Wednesday to be with his wife, who is having surgery.

Of Paul Schrieber's Wednesday altercation with Magglio Ordonez, the Tigers manager said Thursday: "I don't think in any way, shape or form that the umpire intentionally got physical with him."

Minneapolis -- Umpire Paul Schrieber has apologized for making contact with Detroit Tigers outfielder Magglio Ordonez during an argument Wednesday night.

The Tigers have three hitters not doing what they usually do: Magglio Ordonez, Carlos Guillen and Curtis Granderson.

CARACAS, Venezuela -- President Hugo Chavez came to the defense of Magglio Ordonez on Sunday, slamming Venezuelan baseball fans who booed the Detroit Tigers outfielder at the World Baseball Classic.

The Minnesota Twins are starting to wilt in the heat of the pennant race. Minnesota got another mediocre outing from its starting pitcher, the bullpen failed to get a key out, and the timely hits were again absent in a 7-5 loss to Detroit on Sunday. Miguel Cabrera, Magglio Ordonez and Dusty Ryan homered for the Tigers.

The Tampa Bay Rays are counting on Carlos Pena's bat to help them stay in the pennant race. The struggling slugger homered for the fourth time in eight games Friday night, helping the AL East leaders beat the Detroit Tigers 5-2 and retain a three-game lead in the division over Boston. "I really believe in our guys," Rays manager Joe Maddon said.

The Detroit Tigers know they have a lot of power in their lineup. They just didn't count Ramon Santiago among their sluggers - until Tuesday night.

Santiago homered for the first time since 2003 and drove in three runs to help the Tigers beat the Texas Rangers 10-2.

"I put a pretty good swing on that one,"Santiago said of his 380-foot homer down the right-field line."I wasn't expecting to hit one that far."

Manager Jim Leyland appreciated the homer, but doesn't want his soft-hitting utility infielder thinking about hitting more.

"If he starts hitting the ball in the air, he's going to be in big trouble,"Leyland said."It's OK if you hit them that far, but he's not going to hit many that far."

Magglio Ordonez also homered, giving him 1,000 RBIs for his career, while Edgar Renteria had four hits.

"We know our offense is capable of doing this, but we have to do it on a consistent basis,"Leyland said."This was a good step, but we've done this before and then gone back into a slump."

The Rangers are 2-10 since April 11.

"We're in a funk,"Texas manager Ron Washington said."First it was our defense, and now it is the pitching. It seems to have come all the way around on us."

Justin Verlander (1-3) struggled early, giving up five hits in the first two innings, but got out of it with only one run allowed. He blanked the Rangers in his last four innings, giving up one more hit, to lower his season ERA to 5.93.

"I had some trouble with my command early, but I expected that, because I've made some adjustments since my last start,"he said."This isn't exactly what I wanted - I want to be going more than six innings - but I'll take it."

Vicente Padilla (2-2) allowed seven runs and eight hits in three innings. Seven of the hits went for extra bases, including three home runs.

"I had a couple good innings, and then things went wrong,"Padilla said through an interpreter."I didn't make any pitches. I don't feel bad, because it was just one outing, but I have to work to get better."

After Frank Catalanotto's second-inning homer made it 1-0, the Tigers came back with two runs in the bottom of the inning on a run-scoring groundout by Brandon Inge and Santiago's RBI double.

The Tigers took control with five runs in the third. With one out, Ordonez and Miguel Cabrera hit back-to-back homers over the left-field bullpens, and Jacque Jones followed with a triple to center.

Renteria's single made it 5-1, and Santiago increased the margin to six with Detroit's third homer of the inning and his first since Aug. 1, 2003.

"He just lost his focus,"Washington said of Padilla, who was removed after the inning."He's been great for us since spring. This was just a bad night for him."

Josh Hamilton's sacrifice fly made it 7-2 in the seventh, but the Tigers put the game away with three runs in the eighth.

Notes:@ Leyland announced after the game that Carlos Guillen and Cabrera were going to switch positions, effective immediately. Guillen, who moved from shortstop to first base this season, will now go to third, with Cabrera going to first. ... Alex Rodriguez is headed back to the New York Yankees as the American League's Most Valuable Player. A-Rod won his third AL MVP award Monday, easily defeating Detroit's Magglio Ordonez after compiling an astounding season at the plate. Rodriguez received 26 first-place votes and 382 points in balloting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America, while Ordonez had two firsts and 258 points.

Fans chanted "M-V-P!" when Magglio Ordonez came to the plate in the bottom of the ninth Monday night. Once again, he delivered. Ordonez hit a two-run single with two outs in the ninth inning, capping a four-run rally that lifted the Detroit Tigers over the Toronto Blue Jays 5-4. The Tigers moved within 3 1/2 games of idle New York in the AL wild-card race.

Comerica Park is a long way from Curacao. Jair Jurrjens pitched comfortably for the Tigers in front of almost 43,000 fans Tuesday night -- as if everyone was behind him back home in the Dutch Caribbean islands. Jurrjens allowed one hit in his second major league start and Detroit got consecutive homers from Magglio Ordonez and Carlos Guillen to edge the Cleveland Indians 2-1 in the opener of a key...

Carlos Guillen hit a first-inning grand slam off Mike Mussina, and Ivan Rodriguez also homered to help the Detroit Tigers beat the suddenly struggling New York Yankees 8-5 Thursday.

The Tigers moved back into first place in the American League Central, a half-game ahead of idle Cleveland. New York fell 5 1/2 games behind first-place Boston in the AL East. The Tigers and Yankees meet seven more times in the next 11 days. This was their first matchup since Detroit upset New York in the first round of the 2006 playoffs.

This was also Gary Sheffield's first visit to Yankee Stadium since New York traded him to Detroit in the off-season, and fans booed him heavily from the start. Before the game, Sheffield stood by his comments on a July episode of HBO'sReal Sportsthat Yankees manager Joe Torre treated black players differently from white players.

"I said what I said, I meant what I said and I stand by what I said,"said Sheffield, who was 0-for-3 with two walks.

Magglio Ordonez, Brandon Inge and Sean Casey each had an RBI single for Detroit, which took advantage of a crucial error by Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez in the first.

Bobby Abreu hit a two-run homer, but the Yankees lost their third straight after a 9-1 stretch.

Mussina (8-8) had won his previous four starts but was tagged for seven runs -- six earned -- and nine hits in five innings.

The Tigers'Justin Verlander (13-4) allowed three runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings to win his second consecutive start. The right-hander threw 119 pitches, one shy of his season high.

During one stretch from the sixth through eighth innings, eight consecutive Yankees outs came on strikeouts.

Magglio Ordonez was simply trying to get an opposite-field hit when he led off the second inning. By the time the inning was over, Ordonez had two homers and a place alongside Al Kaline in Detroit Tigers lore. Ordonez hit two homers in an eight-run second and Detroit beat the Oakland Athletics 11-6 Sunday to win consecutive games for only the second time since mid-July.

The Minnesota Twins were forced to take another frustrating step back, thanks to Magglio Ordonez's mastery of Johan Santana and the relentless Detroit Tigers. Ordonez homered and drove in all three runs against his fellow Venezuelan, lifting the Tigers to a 3-2 victory over the Twins on Wednesday night and ending Santana's five-start winning streak.

SAN FRANCISCO -- For a day, Vladimir Guerrero was San Francisco's home run king. The Los Angeles Angels slugger won the Home Run Derby on Monday, beating Toronto's Alex Rios 3-2 in the final round.

If Tigers infielder Neifi Perez was hoping for sympathy from his teammates and Detroit's front office, he's out of luck. Perez became the first player penalized for testing positive for a stimulant under Major League Baseball's drug program Friday. The 25-game suspension will cost him about $400,000 of his $2.5 million salary.

For the first time since 1984, the Tigers will have three position players starting in the All-Star Game. While catcher Ivan Rodriguez, second baseman Placido Polanco and outfielder Magglio Ordonez will be part of the American League's starting lineup for the Midsummer Classic, shortstop Carlos Guillen and pitcher Justin Verlander were selected on the player ballot.

"I'm tickled that we're going to be well-represented,"Leyland said Sunday."I'm tickled that nobody can blame me for loading the team up with Tigers."

The five Detroit All-Stars mark the club's highest total since it had six in 1985, when Sparky Anderson managed the American Leaguers coming off a World Series title, and tied Boston for the most on the team pending the upcoming Final Vote. The selection process has changed a lot in 22 years, leaving most of the choices out of the manager's hands.

That makes the respect given the Tigers all the more impressive.

"That plane [to San Francisco] is gonna be full,"Rodriguez joked.

Those making the trip range from the 24-year-old Verlander, making it in just his second season, to Polanco's first selection in his 10th season in the Majors. Ordonez earned his sixth selection, but was elated at his first start. Rodriguez remains proud with each selection, even with 12 starts.

That total will set a Major League record for catchers, breaking Pudge out of a tie with Mike Piazza. His 14th All-Star appearance will move him into a tie among active players at any position. He reigned over an impressive group of American League backstops to become the fans' choice over such talented competitors as Jorge Posada, Joe Mauer, Victor Martinez and Jason Varitek. Rodriguez's 2,343,425 votes topped second-place Posada by about 700,000.

"It's fun,"he said."That's what you work hard day in and day out for."

Rodriguez has been selected an All-Star in all four of his seasons as a Tiger, three of those years as the starter. While he had a strong case to return based on history, both Ordonez and Polanco emerged at their positions as voting continued to gain some well-earned respect.

"When you work and you persevere and you focus, you see how far you can go,"Ordonez said.

Polanco's start ends his years of being one of the more underpublicized players in the game. After earning national attention with his MVP performance in last October's American League Championship Series, he outdrew Yankees counterpart Robinson Cano by nearly a million votes with 2,317,713 ballots.

"When you play for nine years, and it's the first time you're in the All-Star Game, it's unbelievable,"said Polanco, who ranked his All-Star start up with his ALCS honor for the biggest achievements of his career."Wherever you look, you're going to be looking at some Hall of Famers -- [Derek] Jeter and A-Rod [Alex Rodriguez] and Pudge and Manny [Ramirez]. I'm going to get to see Manny being Manny."

Ordonez has established himself as a leading candidate for AL MVP this season with a league-leading .370 batting average to go with 68 RBIs, but it took a late surge in balloting to establish a place for him in the lineup. He passed up longtime starters such as Minnesota's Torii Hunter and Boston's Ramirez to earn his first All-Star start. It'll be his sixth All-Star appearance and second in a row since joining the Tigers in 2005.

Ordonez earned 2,715,389 votes, second among AL outfielders behind Vladimir Guerrero (3,151,387) and ahead of Ichiro Suzuki (2,341,409). It's more than he thought was possible.

"It means a lot,"Ordonez said."The starting lineup, it's huge. It's big company, because being in the game, all the good players that are around, it's nice."

Guillen will return to the All-Star Game for the first time since 2004 on the strength of some of the best offensive totals for anyone at his position. His 59 RBIs and .954 OPS lead all big-league shortstops, while his .390 on-base percentage ranks third.

"When you play good, you get attention from the people,"Guillen said."We seem to be doing better every year. We're going to try to enjoy it and have fun, but after that we have to focus on the season."

The 24-year-old Verlander becomes the first of the Tigers' young pitchers to make it onto the All-Star team, taking his place with help from a notable first-half feat. Verlander became the first Tiger since Jack Morris in 1984 to throw a no-hitter, but it was just part of a dominant June for the second-year right-hander. He tossed 17 scoreless innings during the month and won four consecutive starts before the Twins roughed him up Friday. Even with that, his 3.18 ERA on the season ranks him solidly in the AL's top 10.

On Sunday, he saw his name on the All-Star roster among the greats in the game and had another feat to think about.

"It's definitely pretty surreal being on that list in my second year,"he said."But then again, you have to take a step back and say, 'Hey, this is only my second year.' Don't put the cart before the horse. There's still a long way to go.

"I just don't want to be a two-year pitcher. I want to be around for a while. It's exciting and I'm glad to have my name on the list, but there's still a lot of work to be done."

The 2003 season marked the introduction of the Player Ballot to the All-Star selection process. Each league's players, managers and coaches elect eight position players and eight pitchers from their league. Catchers and infielders who finish in the top two at their position on the Player Ballot, and outfielders among the top six, are assured of making the All-Star Team.In instances where the winners of the Player Ballot are also fan-elected starters, the player with the next highest amount of votes on the Player Ballot makes the All-Star Team. Eight pitchers -- five starters and three relievers -- become All-Stars through the Player Ballot. The manager of each World Series team from the prior season -- in this year's case, Detroit's Jim Leyland and St. Louis' Tony La Russa -- then fills the remaining slots on their respective teams, ensuring that one player from all 30 clubs is named to the All-Star Game.

The anticipated matchup between a two-time Cy Young Award winner and a former American League Rookie of the Year never materialized. Magglio Ordonez is following up his signature October moment in style. The outfielder secured his place in the hearts of Detroit fans with his three-run homer against Oakland that lifted the Tigers into their first World Series in 22 years. The Detroit Tigers were headed toward a second straight rout of the St. Louis Cardinals -- until the defending champions refused to go away quietly. Ivan Rodriguez's three-run homer in the third inning gave Detroit a six-run lead and the Tigers needed to make some strong defensive plays to hold on for an 8-7 victory over St.
