Some pitchers are naturals, and some, like Hackman, take time to learn their craft. After bouncing between Single-A and Double-A teams in the Colorado Rockies' organization from 1994 to 1998, he finally found a groove, going 7-6 with a 3.74 ERA with Triple-A Colorado Springs in 1999. Hackman made three starts with the Rockies that season, giving up three runs in 2 2/3 innings in one appearance before he was shipped to St. Louis in the Darryl Kile trade after the season. Serving as a middle reliever with the Cardinals, Hackman held opponents to a .212 batting average in 35 appearances, though his ERA was 4.29. (EPW)
