Polonia is a fast singles hitter who stole a career-high 29 bases in 1987 for the
A's and scores a lot of runs. He switch-hit all through the minors, even in 1988,
but only bats lefthanded in the majors. The Dominican is an erratic fielder, although
he covers a lot of ground and has a quick release on his throws. The Yankees acquired
him in the
Rickey Henderson deal in mid-1989.
Polonia was sentenced to 60 days
in prison in October 1989 after pleading no contest to a charge of having sex with
a minor while in Milwaukee that August.
