Hall of Famers in every sense of the word:

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. -- On a day of celebration, a record number of fans and Hall of Famers watched two of baseball's classiest players -- Cal Ripken Jr. and Tony Gwynn -- take their place in the Hall of Fame on Sunday.

In these days of bad news in sports, the Baltimore Orioles'record-setting shortstop Ripken and San Diego's perennial All-Star Gwynn were applauded as much for the achievements off the field as on it.

Ripken and Gwynn set the tone early.

"This day shouldn't be all about us,"Ripken said."Today is about celebrating the best that baseball has been and the best it can be. This is a symbol it's alive, popular."

    Gwynn offered the same sentiment.

"I think the fans felt comfortable enough in us, they could trust us and how we played the game, especially in this era of negativity,"he said."I don't think there's any question about that."

    A bit about Ripken

Cal Ripken Jr. spent his entire career in Baltimore, making his mark by playing 2,632 consecutive games and breaking Lou Gehrig's record of 2,130. Ripken, whose dad, Cal Sr., managed the Orioles, thanked his family during his speech. Even though he was a two-time American League MVP and 19-time All-Star, Ripken will always be known for his streak."I always looked at it as just showing up for work every day,"he said."As I look out on this audience, I see thousands of people who do the same -- teachers, police officers, mothers, fathers, business people and many others."

    A bit about Gwynn

Tony Gwynn finished his career with 3,141 hits and won eight National League batting titles in a 20-year career with the San Diego Padres. Always steady on the field, Gwynn was a bundle of nerves for his speech and had problems staying calm when talking about his wife, Alicia."She let me play baseball and she raised the children. My wife allowed me to chase my dreams,"he said. A .338 lifetime hitter, Gwynn set the stage for the offense-heavy baseball game we see today. He was one of the first players to study videotape as an aid to improving his hitting.

    Team players

Before Sunday, there were some San Diego Padres in the Hall of Fame, as well as Baltimore Orioles. But none before Tony Gwynn had gone in with a San Diego hat on, and only a handful went in as Orioles. Gwynn was the first San Diego Padre inducted and Ripken was the fifth member of the Hall inducted as an Oriole. The other Baltimore members were Brooks Robinson (1983), Jim Palmer (1990), Earl Weaver (manager, 1996) and Eddie Murray (2003).

    Summer of love

The crowd of 75,000 was an induction record, as was the 53 fellow Hall of Famers who attended."We [he and Ripken] played for one team and in one city,"Gwynn said."I think fans felt more comfortable with us because they could trust us. They could trust how we played the game and how we conducted ourselves."
