Owner to pay $70 million fraud penalty:NASCAR team owner Gene Haas pleaded guilty Monday to defrauding the government of more than $34 million in taxes. Haas, the 54-year-old owner of Oxnard-based Haas Automation and NASCAR's Haas CNC Racing, agreed to pay a fine, back taxes and interests totaling more than $70 million, the U.S. Attorney's office said. He pleaded guilty to a felony conspiracy charge for orchestrating a plan to list bogus expenses that could be written off as business costs and save Haas Automation millions in taxes. Haas was scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 5. Prosecutors recommended he serve two years in federal prison and six months probation, according to his plea agreement.ObituariesArlington resident, former All-American, 58:Former Louisiana Tech All-American wide receiver Tommy Spinks, who teamed with Terry Bradshaw to form one of the most feared tandems in college football, died at his home in Arlington, following a short illness. He was 58. Spinks, who played for the Bulldogs from 1966 through 1969, helped lead Tech to the Gulf States Conference championship his senior season. A memorial service for the Shreveport native will be Sept. 4 in Arlington.Former Texas swim coach, 98:Camp Longhorn founder Julian William"Tex"Robertson, a former University of Texas swim coach, died Monday at his home in Burnet at the age of 98. The Sweetwater native served as the UT men's swimming and diving coach from 1936-1943 and 1946-1950. The fire probably started in the engine compartment and heavily damaged the rear of the vehicle.
