May 18, 2001 - The Diamondbacks defeat the Cubs‚ 4-0‚ as Randy Johnson (5 innings)‚ Byung-Hyun Kim (3 innings)‚ and Bret Prinz (1 inning) combine on a one-hitter. Coomer's single off Big Unit is the only safety. The Cubs have now lost 8 in a row. Before tomorrow's game‚ Julio Zuleta will borrow a scene from the movie Major League and use a voodoo stick on the Cubs bats to instill hits. It works.

Apr 6, 2001 - The Phillies retire Jim Bunning's uniform number before their home opener‚ a 3-2 loss to the Cubs. The game is delayed an hour‚ 51 minutes by rain. Cubs reliever Todd Von Poppel strikes out all 5 batters he faces while Jeff Fassero gets his 2nd save in 2 nights. Previously‚ his last save was June 30‚ 1993. Julio Zuleta hits the first Cub homer of the year.

Jan 10, 2001 - The Phillies sign free agent OF Brian Hunter to a contract‚ while the Cubs ink free agent INF Ron Coomer to a contract. Coomer will go on the DL April 4 with a knee injury‚ opening the door for Julio Zuleta to take Coomer’s place as the righthanded half of a first base platoon with lefthanded hitter Matt Stairs. Zuleta will leave the major leagues after the 2001 season.
