John Lackey is hurting, and his opening-day start for the Los Angeles Angels is in jeopardy. Dan Haren, meanwhile, is looking sharp for Arizona. Vladimir Guerrero made his first start of spring training and impressed his manager in the Los Angeles Angels' 6-1 victory over the Arizona Diamonbacks. Diamondbacks outfielder Eric Byrnes made his first appearance, too. Guerrero, who had offseason knee surgery, played right field and was hitless in two at-bats.

The Atlanta Braves got quite a scare before their first game at Angel Stadium when major league batting leader Chipper Jones was scratched because of a bizarre batting practice accident. Somehow, they still came up with enough offense to beat Jon Garland. Gregor Blanco was 3-for-4 with two RBI singles and the Braves beat Los Angeles 5-2 on Friday night in their first meeting at the Big A.

Angels owner Arte Moreno said Wednesday the report on the use of performance-enhancing drugs in Major League Baseball will include names of players.

"The names of players will come out that people will be mad about,"Moreno, quoted by theLos Angeles Timesin Thursday's editions, said."Some of my information is second-hand, but I know there's going to be names."

Moreno did not elaborate as to why he felt players, fans, management officials and others would be angered by the identity of any names that come from the report.

The subject came up after the Angels held a news conference to introduce center fielder Torii Hunter, who was signed last week to a $90 million free-agent contract, and right-hander Jon Garland, who was acquired from the White Sox.

Moreno did not say how he came upon such information. He told theTimeshe has urged commissioner Bud Selig's office to be"proactive"in ridding the sport of banned substances.

"Anyone who tries to cheat the system shouldn't be in baseball,"Moreno said."If you've got dirty laundry, get it out there and get rid of it."

Reyes untouchable

The Mets need pitching and they'd love to land Johan Santana. Not enough to trade star shortstop Jose Reyes, though.

"Jose Reyes is one of our core players,"general manager Omar Minaya said Thursday."I don't see us trading Jose Reyes for one of those guys being mentioned. It just doesn't make sense for us."

The Minnesota Twins are listening to trade offers for Santana, a two-time Cy Young Award winner who can become a free agent after next season.

The Mets are one of several big-budget teams thought to be interested, including the Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers and Angels.

The Mets think they might have a package of prospects that could bring back a top starting pitcher, but Minnesota may want the 24-year-old Reyes included in any potential deal for Santana.

Bonds movie

HBO Films is planning to turn a best-selling book about Barry Bonds'alleged steroid use and the government's wide-ranging probe into performance-enhancing drug use in sports into a movie, one of the book's authors said Thursday.

Lance Williams, a reporter at theSan Francisco Chronicle, said that Ron Shelton has been tapped to direct the flick and will co-write the script withTin Cuppartner John Norville once the Hollywood writers strike is settled.

The planned movie based on the bookGame of Shadowswas first reported Wednesday byVariety.

Williams co-wrote the book with sports writer Mark Fainaru-Wada, who recently left theChronicleto join ESPN.

Much of the book was based on secret grand jury testimony of Bonds and others leaked to them by Troy Ellerman, a disbarred attorney sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison for denying under oath he was the reporters'source.

The book recounts how Bonds allegedly began using steroids in 1999 after becoming jealous of Mark McGwire setting Major League Baseball's single-season home run mark the previous season.

The White Sox traded right-hander Jon Garland to the Los Angeles Angels on Monday for shortstop Orlando Cabrera. The 28-year-old Garland, an 18-game winner in 2005 and 2006, was 10-13 with a 4.23 ERA in 32 starts last season. He 92-81 with a 4.41 ERA in 246 games, including 223 starts, over eight major league seasons, all with the White Sox.

The Chicago White Sox took an 8-0 lead in the second inning Thursday -- and promptly gave away the lead in the bottom of the inning.

But Jermaine Dye homered twice and doubled twice, including a go-ahead drive that led Chicago to a 13-9 victory over New York.
