Beazley had a marvelous season in 1942, going 21-6 with a 2.13 ERA and finishing
second in the NL in wins, winning percentage, and ERA. He capped it off with two
wins in the Cardinals'
World Series upset of the Yankees. While serving in the Air
Force during WWII, the quiet Tennessean failed to warm up properly for an exhibition
against his old teammates and severely hurt his arm. He tried in vain to regain his
form after coming out of the service.
