From 1923 to 1930 Devine was the Pirates scout on the West Coast, where he discovered Paul and Lloyd Waner, Joe Cronin, and Arky Vaughan. After managing in the Pacific Coast League for two years, he joined the Yankees' scouting staff, and discovered or purchased Joe DiMaggio, Billy Martin, and Jackie Jensen. (FVP)
