Although he cracked 12 consecutive hits for Milwaukee of the
American Association
in 1923, the slick-fielding Cooney had trouble holding a ML job because of his weak
bat. He made an unassisted triple play on
May 30, 1927, for the Cubs against the
Pirates. In the fourth inning he caught
Paul Waner's liner, stepped on second to
double
Lloyd Waner, and tagged
Clyde Barnhart coming down from first. He was the
son of
Jimmy Cooney Sr., an 1890s NL shortstop, and his younger brother
Johnny Cooney was a outfielder/pitcher for 20 years.
