    Jimmy Anderson

Anderson's fastball rarely topped 90 MPH, but the movement on his pitches induced an inordinate number of ground-ball outs and double plays. It also caused recurring control problems, but Anderson was able to tame his wildness in 1999 and turned in an 11-2 season for Triple-A Nashville in 1999. Brief promotions to the majors during that season made him the 1,500th player ever to appear in a major-league game for the Pirates. The lefty beat out veteran Pete Schourek for a spot in the rotation the following year (a decision that some of his teammates disagreed with) but also spent time in Triple-A and the bullpen while making 27 starts for the mediocre Bucs.
