Chris Young says he will play anywhere in the Arizona batting order, and he has. Leadoff, though, is an especially sweet spot for the Diamondbacks' rookie. Young hit David Wells' first pitch 468 feet into the upper deck in left field and the NL West-leading Diamondbacks went on to beat the crumbling Los Angeles Dodgers again, 6-2 on Saturday night.

The Arizona Diamondbacks roughed up Chris Young again as the NL West race tightened. Extending their mastery of San Diego's All-Star, Tony Clark and Eric Byrnes homered and the Diamondbacks defeated San Diego 9-1 on Tuesday night to pull within .001 of the division-leading Padres. Doug Davis (13-11) allowed one run in seven innings as he reached a career high in victories.

Prince Fielder homered for the second straight day and Milwaukee beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 9-0 Monday night to move into a tie for the NL Central lead. Tiger suspended:Tigers infielder Neifi Perez was suspended for 80 games after testing positive for a third time for a banned stimulant, a penalty that finishes his season. Perez was suspended for 25 games on July 6. Under baseball's labor contract, a player who tests positive for the first time is sent for counseling. Perez has been the only player suspended by Major League Baseball for stimulants since they were banned before the 2006 season. His first suspension had been set to end after Friday night's game against the White Sox. The two suspensions will cost him a total of $1,188,525 of his $2.5 million salary.

The Minnesota Twins' simple approach at the plate made life easier for Kevin Slowey. Michael Cuddyer and Lew Ford homered and drove in three runs apiece to help Slowey and the Twins beat the Detroit Tigers 8-5 Saturday. "Guys are walking, guys are getting in hitters' counts," said Cuddyer, whose team has scored 27 runs in its last three games.
Abreu's first homer takes down D-backs: Scott Baker gave up just one run over seven-plus innings, but it was a 12th-inning rally capped by a Jeff Cirillo pinch-hit, walk-off single that helped the Twins capture a 2-1 victory over the Blue Jays on Tuesday.
Cirillo delivers in a pinch: Scott Baker gave up just one run over seven-plus innings, but it was a 12th-inning rally capped by a Jeff Cirillo pinch-hit, walk-off single that helped the Twins capture a 2-1 victory over the Blue Jays on Tuesday.
Cirillo's Single Lifts Twins in 12th: Pinch-hitter Jeff Cirillo's bases-loaded bloop single in the 12th inning lifts the Twins to a 2-1 victory over the Blue Jays on Tuesday.
Twins: Bloop hit looks perfectly good: Mike Redmond was walked intentionally to load the bases with two out in the 12th inning on Tuesday night at the Metrodome. Jason Tyner was in the on-deck circle but was called back to the dugout. Could it be? Could Justin Morneau make a stunning return for one big at-bat, bruised lung and all? Nope. Wrong injured player. Out hobbled Jeff Cirillo, creaky knees and all, to face Toronto lefthander Brian Tallet. Cirillo got enough of a changeup to have it drop between diving Blue Jays fielders and allow Michael Cuddyer to score the winning run in a 2-1 Twins victory. Cirillo has had surgery on

In a game as well pitched as this one, even Jeff Cirillo thought it was a bit of a shame to win it the way he did. Gimpy knees and all, Cirillo limped off the bench and blooped a bases-loaded single in the 12th inning to lift the Minnesota Twins to a 2-1 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday night.
Twins: No gain, and plenty of pain: Twins manager Ron Gardenhire paced back and forth behind his desk as he talked with a handful of reporters Monday night. "I'm still kind of flabbergasted by the whole event," he said. Gardenhire wasn't flabbergasted because his team found ways to score runs off Toronto ace Roy Halladay but still lost to the Blue Jays 8-5 at the Metrodome. Rather, he had just left the trainer's room, where Luis Castillo was icing a swollen left hand and Jeff Cirillo was having his right knee examined. "It's not a good scenario for [tonight's] game," Gardenhire said. Castillo might need X-rays today if the
Cirillo leans toward retirement: MIAMI -- Twins infielder Jeff Cirillo said Sunday he's about 80 percent certain he will retire at season's end. Cirillo, 37, first made the comment on KSTP AM-1500 and then reiterated his feelings following the Twins' 7-4 victory over the Florida Marlins. Cirillo said he wants to spend more time with his family. His wife, Nancy, and their three children live outside Seattle. "If it was just me, I'd play as long as I can," Cirillo said. Filling in for Justin Morneau at first base again, Cirillo went 0-for-5 and he said it occurred to him that it was probably his last ga
Cirillo in; Punto nudged to bench: NEW YORK - Nick Punto's days as the Twins' everyday third baseman appear to be finished. Jeff Cirillo went 3-for-5 in the team's 9-0 victory over the New York Mets on Tuesday, and manager Ron Gardenhire said Cirillo would probably play third base again tonight. Cirillo also went 3-for-4 as the third baseman in Sunday's victory over Milwaukee. In those two games, Cirillo has raised his average from .207 to .253. After getting most of his playing time as a designated hitter, Cirillo has been better offensively when he's had time in the field. "I think playing third base

Handed a huge lead against a struggling team, Johan Santana simply threw strikes and let 'em hit it. The two-time Cy Young Award winner rarely has it so easy. Santana pitched a four-hitter -- with only one strikeout -- for his first shutout in nearly two years, and the Minnesota Twins took advantage of four early errors Tuesday night in a 9-0 rout of the New York Mets.

A Cirillo Miller thriller: MILWAUKEE - So Jeff Cirillo wasn't signed just to face lefthanders. He certainly wasn't signed to play defense. He was signed to beat the Brewers. Cirillo, who was worried that he was going to set a record for hitting into double plays, had his two hardest-hit balls of the season to propel the Twins to a 8-1 victory over Milwaukee on Friday in the interleague opener for both teams. After missing nearly a month to repair a slightly-torn meniscus in his left knee -- he claimed a little man was playing the guitar in there -- Cirillo showed how he can help the Twins beat left-handed starters th

Stuck in a rut, the Minnesota Twins got back in the win column with a proven method -- a strong pitching performance. Boof Bonser dominated the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday night, striking out a career-high 11 in seven innings to lead the Twins to an 8-1 victory. The Twins won for just the third time in the last 11 games.
Twins place Cirillo, White on DL: Following their 8-2 loss to the Yankees on Monday, the Twins placed infielder Jeff Cirillo and outfielder Rondell White on the 15-day disabled list.
Twins: Painful night, on and off field: What a beating. The Twins, with their thin roster, couldn't field, run the bases or make pitches against the highest-paid team in baseball as they were decked 8-2 by the New York Yankees on Monday at the Metrodome. Twins righthander Sidney Ponson was pounded for eight runs on 10 hits and three walks over 5 2/3 innings, making the free-agent reclamation project the only starter in the rotation without a solid outing. To make matters worse, the Twins had to place starting left fielder Rondell White (right calf) and reserve infielder Jeff Cirillo (left knee surgery) on the disabled list, makin
White, Cirillo are placed on DL: The Twins placed outfielder Rondell White and infielder Jeff Cirillo on the 15-day disabled list Monday and called up outfielder Josh Rabe and infielder Alexi Casilla from Class AAA Rochester. White missed both games against the White Sox last weekend because of a strained right calf muscle. White tried to run before Monday's game but couldn't, leading to the move. "It came out of the blue," White said of the injury. "The toughest part is how hard I worked during the offseason. The way I look at it on the positive side is that it's not two months or anything like

Notes: Cirillo's knee problem resurfaces: The Twins will be without infielder Jeff Cirillo for at least a few days as he deals with soreness in his left knee. An MRI was taken of Cirillo's left knee on Tuesday and an old meniscus tear was found.
Knee to idle Cirillo a few games: Twins infielder Jeff Cirillo will be out a few days after receiving a cortisone shot in his left knee for a slightly torn meniscus -- a problem that goes back to his playing days with the Brewers. Normally a player needs to wait a couple of days after the shot before being able to play, meaning Cirillo will be out until this weekend's series in Chicago. Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said Cirillo recently aggravated the knee. That's why Jason Tyner replaced Cirillo as a pinch runner in the sixth inning on Monday. Cirillo warned Gardenhire earlier in the game that he might
Chip off the old Gardy: Toby comes through: FORT MYERS, FLA. - The Twins rallied to beat the Yankees 4-3 on Tuesday, with Toby Gardenhire, manager Ron Gardenhire's son, in the middle of the winning play. With Matt Tolbert on second, Gardenhire sent a slow roller up the middle that was booted by New York second baseman Chris Basak. Tolbert raced around third and scored the winning run. It wasn't pretty, but another Gardenhire got the job done. "It was kind of nerve-racking to see Toby over here, to tell you the truth," Papa Gardenhire said. "but it was fun, also." Jeff Cirillo had two of the Twins' eight hits. Yankees righthander Car
Twins commit 4 errors in losing to Devil Rays: ST. PETERSBURG, FLA. - The Twins played poorly in the field and failed to make pitches late in a 6-5, 10-inning loss to Tampa Bay. The Twins committed four errors in the game, including two in the eighth. Then righthander Angel Garcia, brought along as an extra pitcher, gave up a walk-off single to Elijah Dukes in the 10th. "We missed a lot of plays and threw the ball away, which we don't do very often," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. Jason Bartlett's wild feed on a force-play attempt in the fifth was the only error made by a Twins regular. Jeff Cirillo, whose forte is wearing out lef
Cirillo to make cameos at short: At 37 years of age, the last thing Jeff Cirillo expected was that he'd have to learn a new position. But with a shortage of backups for starting shortstop Jason Bartlett, the Twins are turning to Cirillo as an occasional backup at the position.
Twins Ford will be sidelined 4 to 6 weeks: FORT MYERS, FLA. - The Twins' competition for reserves has intensified after the team announced Saturday that outfielder Lew Ford will miss four to six weeks because of right knee surgery. Ford will fly to the Twin Cities this week, where arthroscopic surgery will be preformed by team physician Dr. John Steubs. With Ford out, Jason Tyner moves in as the main backup center fielder to Gold Glover Torii Hunter. Tyner, catcher Mike Redmond and infielder Jeff Cirillo are assured backup spots. One or two openings remain, depending on whether the Twins kee
Notes: Twins need a backup plan: The Twins' infield backups are falling victim to the injury bug this spring, leaving a short supply of players available for games. Jeff Cirillo, Alejandro Machado, Alexi Casilla and Luis Castillo are just a few examples of injured infielders.

On Tuesday night, the Twins chose not to offer 2007 major league contracts to Eyre and infielder Luis Rodriguez. Rodriguez re-signed with the team Wednesday, but Eyre said he wants to test the free agent waters. "I just think it's fair to me and my family to explore some other options," Eyre said in a telephone interview Wednesday. "I've been with the Twins organization for eight years, and I hold no grudges toward anyone." Eyre, 28, spent the

Rodriguez re-signed with the team Wednesday, agreeing to take a reduced Class AAA salary if he gets sent to Rochester. Eyre decided to test the free-agent waters.
