Jake Early

While Early was the second-string catcher, he learned to handle the Senators' four knuckleballers by watching Rick Ferrell. When Ferrell spent a couple of years with the Browns, Early took over and he caught the entire 1943 game for the AL All-Stars. He was an exuberant chatterbox behind the plate, singing and doing mock pitch-by-pitch broadcasts to distract hitters. (JK)
