Some historians link the derivation of the
baseball term "flake" to this nail-biting
outfielder, since a teammate once commented that "things seem to flake off his mind
and disappear." Brandt split his outstanding rookie season with the Cards and Giants,
hitting a career-high .298 while leading the NL in fielding (.990). 1958 was spent
in the military. He won a Gold Glove for his play in left field with San Francisco
in 1959.
