Aug 19, 1937 - In a PCL match between Sacramento and San Diego umpire Jack Powell is arrested on the field in the 6th inning for drunkenness. Powell considered the best ump in the PCL took the field against the advice of friends and his fellow ump and immediately got into arguments with the players. After calling a Sacramento runner out at 2B in the 5th even though the second baseman dropped the ball the arrest is made. Sacramento losers by 8-6 protests the game.
Jun 24, 1936 - Joe DiMaggio ties 3 ML records as he connects for 2 home runs in the 5th inning good for 5 ribbies and 8 total bases to lead the Yankees to an 18-11 win over the White Sox. Joe is the 5th batter to hit two homers in an inning. His first is a two-run shot off Babe Phelps and the 2nd homer is a 3-run clout off Fred Lasher. For good measure DiMag adds 2 doubles. for a ML record tying 4 long hits. New York scores 10 times in the 5th 9 runs scoring on homers. Jack Powell accounted for 4 runs in the inning with a grand slam and Gehrig becomes the 1st MLer to collect 100 hits for the year.
Sep 11, 1912 - In St. Louis. Browns starter Jack Powell leaves after 7 innings losing 3-0 to the Highlanders. Reliever George Baumgartner gives up 2 more runs in the 8th but the Browns score 4 in the bottom of the inning to cut the losing margin to 5-4. The New York Times reports the loss to Baumgartner who pitched poorly.
Aug 29, 1911 - After belting a 14th inning homer on August 17th off the Browns Jack Powell A's pitcher Jack Coombs hits another extra inning round tripper this time in the 11th off the Tigers Ralph "Judge" Works. The Tigers win 9-8 on Coombs's error. Coombs's homer is the last one hit at Detroit's Bennett Park. Among major league pitchers only Dizzy Dean will hit two extra-inning homers. Jim Delahanty Tiger 3B sets a ML record by making an unassisted DP for the 2nd day in a row. Another Tiger Marv Owen in 1934 will be the next to do it.
Sep 11, 1905 - The Highlanders sell workhorse pitcher Jack Powell (8-13) to the Browns. Powell won 23 games in 1904 pitching 390 1/3 innings.
Aug 8, 1904 - In Cleveland with the Blues ahead of New York 7-1 in the 4th Dave Fultz and manager Griffith argue a strike call with umpire Silk O'Loughlin. When the refuse to go the bench Silk orders a policeman to escort them off the field. Tomorrow Silk will throw out pitcher Jack Powell and have the police escort Jimmy Williams off the field. Griffith and Williams will receive suspensions from the AL and (according to The Year They Called Off the WS) Highlander owner Frank Farrell vows O'Loughlin will not be allowed to enter Hilltop Park. Jun 28, 1903 - At St. Louis Cy Young shuts out the Browns in the opener 1-0 pinning a tough loss on Red Donohue. Pilgrim righty Long Tom Hughes follows with a 3-0 win over in the nitecap. Jack Powell takes the loss.
May 8, 1902 - At Detroit the Browns beat the Tigers 5-0 behind the 2-hit pitching of Jack Powell. Both hits are by opposing pitcher Ed Siever.
May 28, 1901 - Behind the shutout pitching of Jack Powell St. Louis hands Christy Mathewson his first loss 1-0. Matty's lone walk in the 2nd inning results in the games only run.
Jun 25, 1900 - Jack Powell who will rack up the 4th highest total of losses in history (255) pitches a 2-hitter for the Cardinals beating the Reds 2-0. Powell will have 246 career wins. The loss goes to the Reds pretzel battery of Breitenstein and Peitz.
Aug 1, 1899 - Pitcher Jack Powell's HR in the 14th inning gives St. Louis an exciting 8-7 win over Boston. The drive off Kid Nichols goes beyond CF Billy Hamilton and Powell beats the relay. The fans carry Powell to the clubhouse.
Aug 28, 1898 - Brooklyn and Cleveland play at a neutral field in Rochester NY. Jack Dunn defeats Jack Powell 7-5. Fielder Jones his an inside-the-park home run his first HR of the season.
