May 2, 1959 - The Red Sox send P Dave Sisler and 2B Ted Lepcio to the Tigers for P Billy Hoeft then trade Hoeft on June 15 to Baltimore for P Jack Harshman. Harshman will last a month before he's sold to the Indians.
Jul 1, 1958 - The Orioles and Yankees split the O's winning the opener 7-5 and New York taking the nitecap 2-1. Mantle has a homer in each game including the game two winner with 2 out in the 8th inning off Jack Harshman.
Dec 3, 1957 - Al Lopez‚ who traded Larry Doby when he was managing‚ Cleveland‚ does it again in Chicago. The Orioles swap P Ray Moore‚ Billy Goodman‚ and OF Tito Francona to the White Sox for Doby‚ Ps Jack Harshman and Russ Heman‚ and INF Jim Marshall.
Jun 12, 1957 - At Comiskey Park Mickey Mantle again hits HRs from both sides of the plate and drives in 4 runs but the Yankees lose to Chicago 7-6. Jack Harshman is the winner after losing 6 straight to New York. Chicago now leads the Yankees by 5 games.
Jul 12, 1956 - Jimmy Piersall puts on a show for a camera crew at Fenway there to film a few scenes before the game for his biopic "Fear Strikes Out." When they finished filming the crew asks Piersall to hit a home run to which he says he'll try. With the score tied 1-1 in the 9th and Dick Gernert on 1B Jimmy smashes a Jack Harshman pitch into the net in LF to beat Chicago 3-1. Piersall also robs Lollar of a hit to keep the game tied.
Jun 21, 1956 - For just the 3rd time this century and the 4th ever opposing pitchers throw one-hitters as Jack Harshman of the White Sox beats the combined efforts of Orioles Connie Johnson (7 IP) and George Zuverink (1 IP) to win 1-0. Harshman gives up a 7th inning double to Gus Triandos. The Sox score in the first on a walk stolen base and a double by Nellie Fox. For Harshman it is his 3rd shutout of the year and he has now thrown 20 straight scoreless innings.
Apr 19, 1956 - In a dramatic southpaw duel Chicago's Jack Harshman and Cleveland's Herb Score each fire 2-hitters with the White Sox prevailing 1-0. The Sox score in the 7th without a hit. On June 21 Harshman will win a one-hitter battle 1-0.
Jun 3, 1955 - At Comiskey Park Chicago's Jack Harshman gives up a solo homer to Mantle but gets the Yankee slugger to ground out in the 7th inning with the bases loaded. Mantle's shot hits the left-centerfield facing of the 2nd deck. The White Sox win 3-2.
Apr 23, 1955 - The visiting White Sox erupt for 29 hits in a 29-6 ripping of Kansas City. C Sherm Lollar becomes the only man in the decade to get 2 hits in one inning twice in the same game. Lollar's feat comes in the 2nd and 6th innings. Chico Carrasquel goes 5-for-6 as the White Sox pound out 7 HRs. Bob Nieman has 7 RBIs to pace the Sox offensive attack with 2 homers; Lollar (2) Walt Dropo pitcher Jack Harshman and Minnie Minoso also homer. Chico Carrasquel and Minoso each score 5 runs. KC gets homers from Vic Power and Bill Renna. Bobby Shantz takes the loss.
Aug 13, 1954 - In a brilliant pitcher's duel Chicago's Jack Harshman and Detroit's Al Aber go head to headf for 16 innings before the Sox win it on a one-out run scoring triple by Minnie Minoso. Nellie Fox scores from 1st. Harshman strikes out 12 and has now pitched 28 consecutive scoreless innings. Wayne Belardi who enters in the 13th inning bats out of turn in the 15th and bats his regular turn in the next inning.
Jul 25, 1954 - White Sox P Jack Harshman sets a team record by striking out 16 in a 5-2 win over Boston. The Pale Hose sweep by taking the nitecap 4-2.
May 28, 1954 - It's the managers' day for the bicarb as White Sox (14) and Oriole (18) pitchers combine to hand out 32 walks in a doubleheader. In the first game the Birds send up an AL record 8 pinch hitters (the Sox use 1 for a new ML-record 9). But all is for naught as the White Sox win both 11-6 and 14-8. Gene Michaels clubs a grand slam in the lidlifter to help reliever Jack Harshman win his first ML game.
Apr 19, 1950 - Sid Gordon of the Braves hits the first NL grand slam of the season as Boston beats the Giants 10-6 at the Polo Grounds. There will be 35 grand slams in the league this year a NL single-season record later topped. Giants first sacker Jack Harshman hits his first homer off Johnny Sain but it's not enough.
