The son of respected professor Colonel Critz of Mississippi A&M, 5'8" 147-lb Hughie, like his father, captained the school's baseball team. In his first game with the Reds Critz had two hits against Grover Alexander and hit .322 in 102 games as a rookie. Critz topped NL second basemen in fielding four times and double plays three times.
