One of fourteen children, Malzberger was a control pitcher, a Texas League standout who got his chance with the wartime White Sox. His ability to pitch frequently led manager Jimmy Dykes to put him in the bullpen. His 14 saves in 1943 and 10 relief wins and 12 saves in 1944 were league highs; in '44, he racked up a 10-2 record including seven relief wins in a row by July 15, but finished 10-5. He spent 1945 in the military, and was off the roster by 1948. (RL)
