Watkins was 28 years old when he reached the Cardinals, having spent many of his
prime years in the well-stocked St. Louis farm system. He batted .373 with 17 home
runs as a rookie in 1930, and helped the Cardinals to pennants in 1930 and 1931;
his Game Seven, two-run homer proved the difference in their 1931
World Series defeat
of the Athletics. His batting average dropped off after his .312 season in 1932.
