May 22, 1902 - In a 6-0 loss to Pittsburgh Giants' star George Van Haltren age 36 snaps a small bone near his right ankle while stealing second base. Van Haltren is done for the season and will play only 80 more big league games.
Jun 9, 1901 - Overflow crowds ringing the outfields of small parks is a frequent occurrence. At Cincinnati on this Sunday afternoon the first-place Giants lead 15-4 after 6 innings before 17000 fans. Ground-rule doubles multiply and 19 more runs score in the next 2 1?2 innings. When the crowd edges onto the infield with two outs in the 9th and the Giants leading 25-13 umpire Bob Emslie forfeits the game to New York the 2nd of 2 forfeits this year. The Reds make 18 hits. The Giants register a 20th C. record 31 hits led by the outfield: Kip Selbach is 6-for-7 and "Piano Legs" Hickman and George Van Haltren have 5 hits apiece for a NL record 16. Hickman and Van Haltren score 5 runs apiece. The Giants also set a ML record for most runs without a HR a mark that will be tied by Cleveland in 1930. The two teams combine for a NL record 36 singles 22 by New York. Only one Giant will return to the team in 1902: 5 will go to the AL and 3 will retire.
Apr 19, 1897 - In an exhibitioin game in Elizabeth NJ the Giants wallop a local team 40-1. George Van Haltren has 7 hits.
Aug 8, 1893 - Sam Dungan of Pittsburgh starts the game against Chicago by scoring from 1B as George Van Haltren's wild throw rolls into a rat hole under the grandstand. Pittsburgh finishes up by scoring 5 runs in the top of the 9th and hanging on for a 9-8 win.
Jul 27, 1892 - Baltimore OF George Van Haltren who collected 4 straight hits the day before goes 5-for-5 against St. Louis in a 12-0 romp.
Apr 9, 1891 - Baltimore loses to Boston 8-7 on 8th-inning errors by C Wilbert Robinson and SS George Van Haltren. Shortstop will be a trouble spot for Baltimore all year and the lefthanded Van Haltren will play 59 games there.
Nov 23, 1889 - Before what one writer claims is "the largest gathering in California history" (15‚000 - 20‚000)‚ Oakland wins the California League pennant by beating San Francisco amid much confusion on the final day of the season. San Francisco tied for the pennant by winning 3 in a row‚ so for the final game Oakland hires ringers Willard Brown‚ George Van Haltren‚ and Cliff Carroll. San Francisco refuses to play so the ump awards the game to Oakland. To appease the crowd‚ the clubs play a game with their regular nines. Oakland wins‚ 5-4‚ behind 32-game winner Bill Coughlan.
Jun 21, 1888 - George Van Haltren pitches a 6-inning no-hitter beating Pittsburgh for Chicago 1-0. He also pitches a hitless 7th but since the Colts cannot complete their half before the rain the official score reverts to 6 innings.
Jun 27, 1887 - Highly touted California hurler George Van Haltren makes his ML debut with Chicago and ties the month-old ML record by walking 16 batters while losing to Boston 17-11. Van Haltren will later star as an outfielder for the Giants.
