On June 18, 1953, Stephens had three hits in one inning against the Tigers, but he
spent his most promising ML years as a late-inning substitute for
Ted Williams and
was often called Williams's "caddy." From 1955 through 1959, he averaged nearly 120
games per season but only 1.67 at-bats per game. Even after being traded to the Orioles
in 1960 (Williams's final season), he never became a ML regular.
