Sheffield, Dwight Gooden
's nephew, was the pre-season favorite in 1989 for AL Rookie
of the Year but was sent down in mid-season for "indifferent fielding." He was batting
.248 with four HR at the time and had been the Brewers' regular shortstop. Before
the season, he had removed the gold inlays from his teeth to project a better image
to young fans.
