A product of the majors' bullpen revolution, Gladding was groomed as a relief specialist. In his 13 years in the majors, he started only one game. He also managed only one hit in 63 career at-bats. But Gladding saved 109 games, and with the 1969 Astros the portly reliever's 29 saves led the National League. (DV)
