Rangers get 7 in 2nd off Lackey, beat Angels 12-1:
ANAHEIM, Calif.—Hank Blalock homered in his fifth straight game to trigger a seven-run second inning against John Lackey and the Texas Rangers routed the AL West champion Los Angeles Angels 12-1 on Friday night.
Despite their second-most lopsided defeat of the season, the Angels (99-61) mathematically clinched the best record in the majors for the first time in the franchise’s 48-year history—and home field advantage throughout the postseason earlier in the evening when the upstart Tampa Bay Rays lost 6-4 at Detroit. The Angels will play the wild card Red Sox in the American League Division Series.Josh Hamilton was 3-for-4 with a home run and the Rangers hit six doubles to tie the major league record of 373, shared by the 1930 St. Louis Cardinals, the 1997 Boston Red Sox and the 2004 World Series champion Red Sox.Vicente Padilla (14-8) allowed a run and four hits over six innings and struck out eight in his 29th and final start. The right-hander tied the club record of 11 road victories, and held an opponent to fewer than two earned runs for the ninth time.Padilla, pitching on the eve of his 31st birthday, was staked to the 12-1 lead before he took the mound in the bottom of the fourth.Michael Young scored two runs, raising his total to 101 and making him the first player in franchise history to score 100 or more runs in four different seasons. Rookie Chris Davis was 4-for-4 with an RBI single in the No. 9 spot. When the Angels took the field for the fourth, manager Mike Scioscia removed his entire starting lineup all at once—except for right fielder Juan Rivera, who shifted to left field after Kendry Morales came in to play right. DH Vladimir Guerrero also got the rest of the night off.Lackey (12-5) gave up 12 hits and a career-worst 10 runs over 2 2-3 innings in the shortest of his 206 big league starts. The right-hander is slated to start the division series opener at Angel Stadium against the Red Sox, who swept the Halos in the first round last year en route to their second World Series title in four seasons.Lackey, who missed the first 41 games of this season because of a biceps strain, finished with a 3.75 ERA—74 points higher than last season, when he won a career-high 19 games and joined Dean Chance (1964) and Frank Tanana (1977) as the only Angels pitcher to win an ERA title.Lackey had a winning record for the fifth straight year—tying Tanana’s franchise mark. Lackey is 72-43 in 155 starts over the last five seasons with a 3.74 ERA.Lackey threw 73 pitches, 26 of them in the second inning before recording an out as the first seven batters reached base. Blalock’s 12th homer snapped a 1-1 tie, rookie Chris Davis singled home a run, Joaquin Arias followed with an RBI double, Young doubled home two more and Marlon Byrd capped the rally with two-run single.Reggie Willits, who replaced Torii Hunter in center field with the game out of hand, did his best impersonation of the seven-time Gold Glove winner by robbing Nelson Cruz of a home run in the sixth. The 'soft' sell: Pitchers have different survival methods: Let's be careful about comparisons between Barry Zito and top pitchers who succeeded throwing soft stuff. Frank Tanana? The difference: Tanana used to throw 100 mph. In one game for the 1975 Angels, the left-hander struck out 17 Rangers. But an arm injury...
Saunders shuts down A's in Halos' win: Joe Saunders helped the Angels even the series with a 2-0 victory over the A's in front of 35,764 on Tuesday night. Saunders tossed eight shutout innings and allowed four hits while walking one and striking out five to become the first Angels pitcher to go 5-0 in April since Frank Tanana in 1978.
American League in review: What went right:RHPJohn Lackey became the first Angel to win an ERA title sinceFrank Tanana in 1977. . . . After early-season struggles, 3BChone Figgins and LFGarret Anderson found their grooves and kept them for the final four months. . . .Orlando Cabrera led AL shortstops in fielding percentage at .983 and had career highs in average (.301) and on-base percentage (.345).
