Jun 12, 1990 - Baltimore wins in dramatic fashion beating Milwaukee 4-3 in 10 innings. Dan Plesac serves up a 2-out HR in the 9th to Mickey Tettleton which ties the game then tees up a leadoff homer to Milligan in the 10th. Orioles SS Cal Ripken plays in his 1308th consecutive game to move past Everett Scott into 2nd place on the all-time list. By passing Scott Ripken sets a record for consecutive games at one position. Gehrig's longest was 885 games at 1B.
Aug 17, 1933 - Against the Browns Lou Gehrig plays his 1308th consecutive game to break Everett Scott's mark. Lou is 2-for-5. Manager Hornsby razzed by the Yankees all afternoon inserts himself as a pinch hitter with 2 outs in the 10th and cracks a 3-run homer off Lefty Gomez to win the game 7-6.
Jun 1, 1925 - At a Monday game at Yankee Stadium 18000 are on hand to see the Babe make his first appearance of the season. He goes 0-2 with a walk against Washington's Walter Johnson before leaving in the 6th inning. The Nats win 5-3. In the 9th inning Lou Gehrig begins a consecutive-game streak that will surpass Everett Scott's mark by pinch-hitting for Pee Wee Wanninger the SS who replaced Scott in the Yankees lineup.
May 5, 1925 - Everett Scott is benched by New York manager Miller Huggins ending his record 1307-game playing streak. Pee Wee Wanninger replaces him at SS in the 6-2 loss to the A's. Scott will soon go to Washington on waivers. The Yanks send lefty P Ray Francis to the Red Sox for OF Bobby Veach and P Alex Ferguson. The 2 will be waived together in August.
Oct 7, 1923 - At New York Yankees SS Everett Scott runs his consecutive-game streak to 1138 in a 9-7 season finale loss to the A's.
May 2, 1923 - Walter Johnson gets his 100th shutout and New York SS Everett Scott gets a gold medal from the AL for playing in his 1000th consecutive game. Scott's skein began on June 20 1916. Washington defeats the Yankees 3-0 as Big Train allows just 3 hits.
Apr 22, 1923 - The first Sunday game at Yankee Stadium draws an estimated 60000 but the Yankees despite an 8th inning HR by Everett Scott suffer their first loss of the year 4-3 to Washington's Walter Johnson.
Aug 13, 1922 - The New York Yankees Everett Scott nears 1000 consecutive games played but it takes an extra effort to keep the streak alive. He spends $40 to hire a car to get to Chicago in time for the game after a train he is on is wrecked. Washington wins 3-2.
May 15, 1922 - In a 4-1 win at New York Ty Cobb beats out a grounder to SS Everett Scott. Veteran writer Fred Lieb scores it a hit in the box score he files with the Associated Press. But official scorer John Kieran of the New York Tribune gives an error to Scott. At the season's end the AL official records based on AP box scores list Cobb at .401. New York writers complain unsuccessfully claiming it should be .399 based on the official scorer's stats. Lieb will reverse himself at the end of the year but Ban Johnson goes with the hit call.
Dec 20, 1921 - The Yankees raid Boston again and come away with P Bullet Joe Bush SS Everett Scott and P Sad Sam Jones in exchange for SS Roger Peckinpaugh (who goes on to Washington) pitchers Jack Quinn Rip Collins and Bill Piercy and $50000.
Oct 2, 1921 - The Yankees close the season by beating the Red Sox 7-6. Ruth hits No. 59 off Curt Fullerton; for the team it is No. 134. Stuffy McInnis completes his 119th consecutive errorless game at 1B (1300 chances) and Boston SS Everett Scott plays his 832nd consecutive game a team record that will not be approached this century. The previous Red Sox mark was held by Buc k Freeman (535) and Frank Malzone will accumulate the next highest with 475 games.
Apr 26, 1920 - In Washington Red Sox SS Everett Scott plays in his 534th consecutive game a major league record. The previous mark was 533 set by the Phillies Fred Luderus. The Nationals win 2-0 as Joe Johnson outduels Bush.
Jul 9, 1918 - The Red Sox tighten their hold on first place with a 12-inning 1-0 victory over the visiting Indians. Everett Scott doubles over Tris Speaker's head and after a forceout the winning run scores on a single by Wally Mayer. Starter Joe Bush outduels Jim Bagby for the win.
Apr 19, 1918 - In the annual Patriot's Day twinbill in Boston, new Red Sox pitcher Joe Bush debuts with a 21 four-hit win over the Yankees saliva slinger Allan Russell in the a.m. game. The Red Sox (5-0) complete the sweep in the afternoon with a 95 win behind Babe Ruth's 13-hitter. Ruth further contributes a single and a long RBI fly to right that scores Everett Scott from 2B after the Frank Gilhooley catch. The Yankees help with six errors in the game, three by Del Pratt, who offsets them with four hits.
Apr 16, 1918 - The Reds' Pete Schneider in a season opener and the Red Sox' Carl Mays each pitch one-hitters. Red Sox submariner Mays loses his no-hitter in the 8th on Dugan's ground single stopped by 2B Dave Shean but beats the A's 1-0. Everett Scott drives home the winner in the bottom of the 9th off Scott Perry. The Reds top the Pirates Wilber Cooper 2-0 with Casey Stengel's single the lone Buc shot.
Jun 20, 1916 - Tilly Walker's HR over the LF wall is the only HR the Red Sox will hit at Fenway this season but it is the lone Boston score today as the Yankees win 4-1. Inserted as a defensive replacement late in the game Boston SS Everett Scott starts a string of 1307 consecutive games all played at SS. He will complete the streak as a Yankee on May 6 1925. It will be the best until Gehrig's 2130.
