Wells was a superb pitcher in the minors; sent down to the Southern Association several
times, he would work his way back to the majors. Though never a consistent winner,
he recorded a 12-10 record with a league-high four shutouts for Detroit in 1926.
He went 12-3 for the 1930 World Champion Yankees, despite a 5.20 ERA, and was not
used in the Series.
